Windows 7 update advisor does not start

    Hi all,
I would like to run the Windows 7 update advisor but when I click the "start check" button absolutely nothing happens.

I googled for that phenomenon but only found entries saying that one needs to start this using "Run as administrator...", but this is on Windows XP, not Vista, and XP doesn't even have such an option. And my user-ID *IS* member of the Administrators group, so I should definitely BE running this with admin priv's.

Any ideas what could cause this and how to get this running?

If you have a special character in your login name (&, _, *, etc), then you must create a new user with administrator privileges that does not have any special characters. You cannot rename your account - this does not alter the account at all.

This has come up before. Please refer to this thread:

    Upgrade advisor wont RUN!

Turned out, that one apparently one actually has to log in as "Administrator". Then the update advisor worked as expected. Just being logged in as a normal user (albeit one that is member of the "Administrators" group) caused this unexplained no-reaction to my click onto the "start check" button.

Of course that's nowhere mentioned in the program's description...

So, your administrator user did not have any special characters in the name?

And - if a user is in the administrators group, then it's an administrator. The upgrade advisor doesn't require you to be logged in as the hidden administrator user. At least, no other XP users have reported it.

Using Vista Home Prem 64. Admin has no special characters. Right clicked the W7 Upgrade Advisor and "ran as admin" and the same thing happens to me when I click on START. Nothing. Wont run. Tried searching for another download site but they all point to the same one. This one:
Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
Tried RUN and put the exe in there; nothing. The start button does not work. Any other ideas?
