There is an install medium conflict, which can be resolved. I am not certain where to find it.

In XP, there is an entry in a text file (SETUPP.INI) that identifies the install medium as OEM, retail or volume. The key type must match this entry. Change the value in the text file to match the key type and you are good to go.

What you are suggesting is legitimate, nonetheless.

Sorry that I don't know the filenames in Win 7.

Yes you can use the key.

It would be easier if you were to burn your ISO to a disk first. Amd make sure you are insalling the correct version at the start.

But you don't need to edit any text files or anything like that.

I was just digging around the Win7 setup files and it looks like Joel is correct. It seems as if the install disk includes everything you need for any version except enterprise.

Which prompts me to wonder - It seems that there will soon be a web-published manner for converting the cheaper OEM disks into retail disks.

I would have a look and see if you have a file called ei.cfg in the "sources" folder - if you do, delete it.

Then you can install any Edititon from that .iso

You should be able to do that easily if you have a paid iso handler , like MagicIso, UtraIso, or PowerIso.

Otherwise, you will need to extract the contents of the. iso to the HD , delete ei.cfg, and remake an .iso.

Glad you posted. The question here is not whether a particular version can be installed. The question is - Will an OEM key work on a TechNet install disk?

Joel's unqualified response contains an error - Joel does not address versions (ei.cfg) when he states that no editing of any kind is required.

I haven't done it with 7, but had no trouble with Vista SP2 and the key from the sticker on a Dell machine.

You could try editing the ei.cfg instead of deleting it - the Channel info is in there as well as the Edititon.

    It looks like this :

    [EditionID]
    Ultimate
    [Channel]
    Retail
    [VL]
