Partition on external hdd not accessible in windows 7

I have an external hard drive that has two partitions. I had the Windows 7 upgrade installation file from Digital River on the first partition. I ran the install from there and everything installed fine within XP. Then I went back to the external hard drive to get some other programs to install and it told me that the drive is not accessible. However it shows me both drive letters and I am able to read the other partition fine. It just will not see the first one. If I put the drive on another computer, it is able to see the drive and all the data.

So I am wondering if it locks you out of the partition from which you run the installation and if so, is there anyway to get access back to it?

I have already put XP back on the computer and I am going to try it a different way and then see if I have access to the first external hdd.

Ok, so I reinstalled XP and then installed 7 from a USB stick and the drive is now visible. So I can only assume it can't see the drive it is installed from.

Why did you put XP back on in order to reinstall Win7? Unnecessary unless you want dual boot. You could have booted from the stick and got a clean format install.

It was blind to a second external partition.

Everything running okay now? If so, make a Win7 Backup image to store externally so you never have to reinstall an OS again, just reimage the HDD (or a replacement) in 15 minutes using your Win7 installer repair console.

At the time I was not sure if I had to have another OS installed. I have another post about that problem. But yes, I did manage to get everything working now and I have created an image of it. thanks.
