Upgrade Taking Forever with Black Screen

Hi guys, this is my first post here, so please bear with me. :)

    Here's my problem.

This summer I pre-ordered Windows 7 upgrade DVD and now trying to upgrade my Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

I chose the upgrade option because I had quite a lot of installed program. I didn't backup my files.

It took about 2 hours to complete first 4, I think, steps before the 1st reboot. Then the upgrade rebooted my machine again and the monitor screen went black, while the computer idle light indicator was actively blinking. Then it took another 2 hours doing so with a black screen before I saw Windows is Starting logo and then the screen again went black. The idle light indicator blinks approximately once a second but nothing else happened in last many hours (about 10). I started the upgrade at 4:20pm and now it is 11:33 am next day.

    My system configuration:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Quad processor Q6600 (8MB L2, 2.4GHz, 1066FSB)
Windows Vista Home Premium Edition SP2, 64-Bit
    8GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz
    ATI Radeon HD 3650 256MB
640GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

Please advise how I should proceed. Obviously, something is going wrong but should I wait more? Any help will be appreciated.

run the upgrade advisor for potential issues:

try using the vga port on the graphics card if you are using the dvi port.

    The problem is solved!

I had a TV connected via HDMI cable, I disconnected it and restarted. Windows 7 was already on the last step of the upgrade setup. It took 2 more minutes to finish it.

I think the problem was due to Catalyst Control Center suite version not being supported by Windows 7 (I got such warning before the upgrade) and the upgrade process improperly identified monitors (confused primary and secondary one) - I could have probably finished the installation from my TV.

This topic can be marked solved.

I had similar problems, not during installation, but while using the dvi port (dvi to hdmi for my 42" lg jazz)

Glad you got it to finish.

Upgrades can take a long time, it has to process all the programs.
It can take up to 20 hours in some cases.

Always disconnect all non-essential peripherals, leave only monitor, keyboard and mouse.
