Windows 7: Sony says I can't upgrade from 7 Premium to Ultimate

Well the last time I checked the cost of the Anytime Upgrade facility from Microsoft - the coust was stated as $140 US. This would I think be a better option cost wise than the $300 sony want to charge. From the details you have given here is no reason I can see for you not to get the lower cost model and update Via the Upgrade proceedure

It's not Sony that charges around $ 300 - it's a dealer . Sony still maintains that Ultimate cannot be installed in the model on their website . The models the dealers sell have better specs ( 1 TB HDD and 12GB of RAM ) but cost $ 300-350 more than the model on Sony's site .

Going to look around at other company's offerings .

This "Cannot be upgraded to Ultimate for no concrete reason" is the stupidest thing I have heard coming from Sony

Like Barman said...the specs for HP and Ult are the same and an upgrade to Ult should be no issue whatsoever...

It is sad that Sony wants to sell their upper level machines so badly that they resort to give out false information to consumers in hopes of said consumer forking over the cash for a more expensive computer

This is really bad info. The only thing that i know that will prevent you from installing Windows 7 is if the specs on your pc would not support it. But if the unit is already running a lower version of Windows 7 THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for it not to be able to upgrade!

"The Adobe Production Premium CS4 package is built for filmmakers. Its key components include the updated Premiere for video editing, After Effects for postproduction effects, OnLocation to assist with perfecting shoots on the spot, and Soundbooth to tweak audio. Adobe integrates Photoshop and Illustrator for graphics, as well as Flash for crafting video and animation for the Web."
(from- Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium Software reviews - CNET Reviews)

I mean do you really need this upgrade ? My suggestion would be just to go ahead with $140 for the anytime upgrade

Sushiman, I think what you want to accomplish is a dual boot, the original in Japanese and a second one in English, the latter installed in a different partition, from a different license, which you have to install and then plug the language pack.

Am I far?

I also don't think there is any technnical reason why you shouldn't be able to install or upgrade to Ultimate. Unles they built some protection in that won't allow you to run anythign except the OEM OS. That would be a dirty trick....

Windows 7 Premium

Well , I had my wife call HP Japan today to inquire about the Touchsmart 300 model and ask about upgrading from Premium 7 to Ultimate via Windows Anytime Upgrade once I had the computer . According to wifey , HP had pretty much the same attitude as Sony . Howver . they didn't say ( as Sony did ) that the guarantee would become VOID if I upgraded . Sony is history in my book . HP said it was Microsoft's OS so wouldn't say one way or the other . My wife called Microsoft Japan , gave the maker name w/ model number and asked if we could upgrade without a problem and they said YES .
My wife said that the support rep was extremely helpful and cordial , informing her that the upgrade could be done online for a cost of around $ 150 US ( 16,800 yen ) .

So , I have decided to go with the HP and will upgrade once the PC is in my hands .

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions .

Ordered an HP TouchSmart 300 All In One directly from HP Japan yesterday . Was pleasantly surprised to find out that all HP computers sold in Japan are MADE IN JAPAN , in a Tokyo factory .

Will upgrade to 7 Ultimate once the computer arrives which ought to be by next weekend .

Thanks again to all for your replies .
