A query on updating from Win 7 to Win 8.1

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 but I do not have the product key for it. However, I do have a product key for Windows 8.1. Can I update to Windows 8.1 without having any problems?

All help appreciated,

You can update to Windows 10 for free from any legitimate 7 or 8 install. Try 10 if you really want to upgrade and keep the 8 key as a spare.
