    upgrading stops early

    Good morning All,

Been reading and reading and reading but did not find my problem on upgrading yet......

Have the following problem: Running Vista and bought online and downloaded Windows Ultimate 32 bit.

Downloading went without problems: setup 1 & 2 and the exe file are stored at Users file.

When start the exe file it starts to work on box 1 but stops after 40 sec. with the remark : Unknown error.....

Who has a solution for this ?

    Thank you in advance,

Regards from rainy but beautiful Holland,

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

Try this tutorial to make those files into an ISO file.
Make bootable iso from student d/l - How to make an ISO file with the student down load that has these 3 files : Windows 7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64.exe, setup1.box and setup2.box.

Here is some additional information from MS TechNet.
We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded

Let us know if this helps or you have any questions.

Dave has given you, probably, the best information. I think, however that your problem is in one of several areas. I think that you will have to download again. But other, likely suspects: you are not installing the correct version 32 v 64 bit, if you have an upgrade version of 7, your prior version of Vista is not the correct edition (Home Premium etc). While doing the reseaarch that Dave has supplied, keep my points in mind.

    Dear Richard & Dave,

Maybe I should have add more precise information to you....

My current version Vista is: Home Primium and regularly updated.

    I bought/downloaded: Ultimate 32 bit UPGRADE.

In the help files they are mentioning STUDENT versions......

I will download the files again, as Richard mentioned.

Thank you in advance for a reply,

You guys are fast, Great !

Vista Home Premium should perform upgrade to Win7 Ultimate no problemo! As Dave76 said follow these instructions Make bootable iso from student d/l and burn an iso... or if you just want to download the iso, try the links in this article: Microsoft responds to Windows 7 student upgrade SNAFU with direct ISO download (your cd key will work)

You can even load from a USB here is how: Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool

When you mentioned setup 1 & 2 and box 1, these sound like the files that were available for downloading from the MS student sites.

So you d/l an ISO file?

How are you installing burned to DVD or put it on a USB key?

Can you clarify the first post, what files are you talking about?

Dave I believe he has the student DL since he called them setup 1 & 2 and the exe file... thats not the student .iso. And he sez he ran the exe file to start install...

Tombos use the link I gave in previous post and just dl the student iso file directly... that is assuming you have a blank dvd to create a bootable install disc.

    Hi Darryl,

    That's what I thought also,

Aren't the student D/L's Premium or Pro?

The OP said he has Ultimate.

    We'll see when there's a reply.

Didnt catch that Dave, but yes student dl is either Pro or Home Premium.

I can also say that Ultimate is not available through MSDN Academic Alliance; as the school I work for has MSDNAA, and we only have Pro and Enterprise on our DL site!

Tombos what is this??? Where did you get it?
