OK, follow Tews instructions to create a boot CD. Then boot from it. There is no "backup" option in GParted, you have to select the partiton you want copied and indicate where you want it (I am quoting from memory, please read the tuturials). Please notice it does not do the changes immediately, you have to click "Apply" for the changes to take effect

Your external hard drive would not appear in your boot options... in the time that we have spent so far, you could have done a clean install and re-installed your apps.... you are delaying the inevitable...
Might be worth a try to backup via GParted (Gnome Partition Editor)... might also try to install Win7 on top of itself... into the same partition/drive it resides now.
Did you shutdown or have a power outtage in the middle of an update? There were several Win7 updates this week!
I reinstalled windows 7 and it backed up all my flies to windows.old so it all worked out. Thanks a ton guys!

I advise you to keep a backup of your personal files, actually a system image is preferable, in a separate drive, that external drive should work. With an image (that win7 can create) you can quickly reinstall your system to its original state if something happens. Do not count on backup being Windows.old, if your hard drive goes bad that will go bad with it
