Windows 10 is waiting in Updates, don't want it

My "work" system, which I'll call "this laptop", is Windows 7 Pro. I have another laptop with the same system and it installed updates a little while ago, so I thought I'd better check this laptop so I could install the updates in a controlled fashion.

However, when I went into Windows Update in Control Panel I saw, to my horror, that Windows 10 was waiting to install and there's no option to remove it.

I have since cancelled my reservation and uninstalled KB3035583, done a system restore, everything I can think of, but every time I go into Control Panel it's still there.

The "Get Windows 10" icon has gone from Taskbar.

I do have Windows 10 on another laptop (yes, I've got a lot of them), but cannot have it on this laptop because vital software is incompatible.

Please can someone help me out of the terrifying hole I've got myself into.

I thought I had cancelled the reservation but must have only done it on my other Windows 7 laptop. Now it's gone past that stage on "this laptop", Windows 10 is waiting to install itself in Windows Update, as per my screenshot and therefore I can't install normal Win7 updates.

    Thanks for trying :)

If the Windows 10 update is already downloaded, look in-

If you want to get rid of it, if it shows up there or elsewhere in the main folder, delete it.
You can rename the Download folder & delete it to get rid of everything in it quickly.
When you restart your computer it will be recreated by Windows.
    I have done this myself.
    This is not speculation.

I unreserved Windows 10 via the Notification Area Windows 10 icon.
This makes any future appearance of it in Windows Update something that won't happen.

I also have Windows Update set to notify me about updates but not to download any unless I choose to download them.
As per the above, I renamed and deleted the Download folder, then rebooted - but the Download folder has not been recreated. Do I need to be concerned?

Also, the Windows 10 update is still waiting in Windows Update to be installed.

The "Shut Down" button is showing that updates are waiting to be installed but I dare not use it because I don't know if it will install Windows 10.

    Oh dear.

Did you read the rest of that thread? The other posts below that with the link provided are what solved it I believe.

I couldn't understand the rest of the thread, but it seemed to refer to a scheduled Win10 update, which mine was not. I could not identify a scenario the same as mine. Sorry. I am completely fuddled.

I see you posted there too so you should get some useful help between the two threads.

Hmm Derek seems to me that Microsoft have made a real pigs ear of this one - almost like being bullied into using that 10 system

I had it reserved and after a week of waiting for it past the 29th, I just unreserved it and haven't been "bullied" into anything.

There's a lot of variables involved...
