Windows 7 in bad state after Windows 10 upgrade attempt

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes: my father tried to upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 on two of his laptops.

The upgrade succeeded on one computer, but the installer would not run on the other. There is no error message or anything; the installer simply appears to do nothing. However, the computer started having numerous problems afterwards: many of the programs would not run anymore, and those that still work now take an extremely long time to start.

System Restore gives me a "The dependency service or group failed to start" error. I did lots of Google searching but could not find any solutions. I tried to repair the operating system using the Windows 7 installation disc, but the same error occurs. Anyone got any suggestions?

All the files have been backed up, but we'd rather not have to do a clean install if possible due to the amount of time involved, and Dad urgently needs to use his computer. Thanks so much!

    Hi ixfd64

Sorry I can't offer a solution, but it sounds like things could be a lot worse, since you still have the clean install option, and how long will that take, an hour? Plus another hour to restore files?

    :)

Well, my father decided to use the clean install option. The good news is that he was able to easily upgrade to Windows 10 from there. Thanks for the response!

Should have created a disk image before starting, lesson learned
