    Issue accessing BIOS after installation


    Hi all,

    I dropped my laptop recently which caused the HDD to fail. I bought a new one, installed it, changed the boot order in BIOS to a USB and seemingly successfully reinstalled Windows. Following this I went back into BIOS to have it boot from the new HDD, but like an idiot, accidentally selected the optical drive as the first boot drive.

    Since then, whenever I started the machine I got a message saying Operating System not Found. This would just repeat when I hit F2 to access BIOS and I have not been able to get into BIOS since then (F2 was always the way to do it).

    I have now put Windows onto a DVD and put that in the disc drive. The laptop does indeed try to boot from this, and starts to install Windows, but I still cannot access BIOS. F2 does nothing, and when press F12 I get the same Operating System Not Found message.

    The other change I made in BIOS was from Legacy back to UEFI (which was the original setting).

    If anyone has any thoughts I would be most grateful. Do I need to reset BIOS via the CMOS battery? Seems hard to do on a laptop.

    Even if the dvd drive is listed 1st, it should still bypass that when there`s nothing in the drive and go to the next bootable device (your hard drive) you may have another issue.

    Thanks AddRAM. I assumed that should be the case about the boot order so glad to have it confirmed. Could you make a guess as to possible issues?

    Hi Sparkyrose, if you dropped your laptop one thing we need to eliminate is hardware/keyboard issues. You need to check your F2 function key is actually working:

    Keyboard Tester

    Launch the tester and see if the button lights up on screen when you press it.

    There also might be a setting in your bios called Boot Disk Priority, if you have it make sure the hard drive shows up as the 1st item.

    Since you`re going back into the bios, you might as well set the hard drive back to boot 1st.

    If the bios sees the hard drive and you still get that message, I`d just try reinstalling windows again see if the hard drive shows up during the install.

    Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I cannot get the machine online as yet so I can't use the Keyboard tester. However, the F2 key is definitely responsive as It causes the Operating System not Found message to repeat each time.

    Regarding the BIOS Boot Disc Priority, I can't change that setting because I can't get into BIOS at all.
