    Windows won't boot

I was in the process of trying for the free Windows 10 upgrade. After several unsuccessful attempts, and after W10 install instructions to remove Acronis True Image 12, Windows now won't start. The most recent change was to uninstall the graphics card driver. Windows 10 install began a couple of times w/o the card driver or acronis, but now will not start at all. I've tried:

    • Windows repair utility - it doesn't identify a problem and says there is no restore point
    • Start in safe mode to restore graphics driver
    • Used "System Repair Disc" that I created when I installed 7 pro. It went through a series of tests and said that results would be reported on restart. Restarted but nothing - still goes to "windows is starting" then nothing.

What should I try next? I have the original install disc but I'd rather not reinstall windows because I don't want to reinstall all my programs. Most of the data is on another computer so data loss is not a problem.

    ADDED LATER:

Inserted the w seven install disc and choose the repair option. After scanning the computer it returns in "diagnosis and repair details - boot status indicates that the is booted successfully"

Still, when I try to start the Windows logo appears and then the monitor reports "mode not supported"

    Hi lbeck,

could you please try the following steps?
    1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer by clicking the Start button , clicking the arrow next to the Shut Down button , and then clicking Restart.
    2. Do one of the following:

      • If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by shutting down and restarting your computer.
      • If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start, and then press F8.
    3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration (advanced), and then press Enter.
    4. If your computer has more than one operating system installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system that you want to start by using Last Known Good Configuration, and then press Enter. Windows will then resume starting normally.

    Cheers
    Boris :)

    Thanks, Boris.

I can't get to the start button. The boot process doesn't get that far. But I can get to safe mode and I've tried the roll back to last good configuration. It reports that there are no restore points. This may be because I deleted Acronis at the request of the W10 install routine?

    I have only one OS.

Yes, I have both. The repair utility appears very similar to what is available with a healthy or partial boot: safe mode, revert to most recent good boot, etc. running repair options doesn't find a healthy boot to go to....

I am able to open in safe mode. There, under Computer Management, I am able to see several error codes. Mostly Event ID 7001. A phrase found in a recent setup log that may be helpful is "Package KB3112148 was successfully changed to the Installed state." That may be when the windows 10 setup failed, or something else?

Problem is that I'm shooting in the dark. I don't know what to look for. If someone can direct me to the right place using safe mode, I'll be happy to retrieve information.

    Thanks.

    Hi lbeck,

do you still have the windows.old folder under the C drive?

If you do then you could boot into Safe Mode and do these steps:

    1. Use the Windows + I shortcut to open the Settings app.
    2. Navigate to Update & security and go to Recovery.
    3. If everything is set correctly on your PC, you'll see the option Go back to Windows 7. Here simply click the Get started button.
    4. At this point, you will need to pick the reason you're going back, click Next.
    5. You will get a warning that you'll need to reinstall some apps and programs, and you'll lose any changes made after upgrading to Windows 10. Keep in mind that while a file backup is not necessary, but it's highly recommended, and then click Next.
    6. Make sure you know your Windows 7 password as you'll be locked out of the system without it, and then click Next.
    7. Finally, click the Go back to Windows 7 and to begin the downgrade process.

Hope this will get you back on track!

    Cheers!
    Boris :)

Good suggestion! I should have looked for that. Unfortunately, the W10 install didn't get far enough to write the windows.old file.

I'm thinking that I may need a guru that can decipher the error codes. I am encouraged that I can get to the windows management utility where error codes are written.

Well I don't know how imperrative it is for the Windows.old to exist to do the Recovery process.

Did you look at the Recovery tab at all?

I finally got seven to install using my OEM disk. Now I'm having problems upgrading to Ten so I'm starting a separate thread on that.

    Thanks.
