    Install from XP

Damien, yes you can install a copy of windows 7 onto a system using windows xp.
How ever, you will need to perform a complete install and you will lose everything that you have on your ststems hard drive!
    Programs, files, the whole lot!
So before you proceed, backup all essential documents and files. Make sure you have backups of all essential programs.

    Regards,

Any particular reason Megan would need Ultimate? Home Premium is enough for the vast majority of users and is considerably less expensive.

she uses it for the home use, but her bf uses the business end of it, he's the one that insists they get ultimate. i found the link to editing the dll file to install on systems with 512 or less of ram. gonna try that i guess.

If you're prepared to spend that kind of money on Ultimate, it's absurd not to max out the RAM to 2GB, which would permit it to run rather better than 512MB. (That's assuming that the notebook doesn't need to be disassembled to install two SODIMMs, like some.)

If you're in the US, moderately expensive (but reliable) kit would be $60, if you replace all of the existing RAM:

Computer memory upgrades for Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

I wonder whether your friend's BF actually needs any of the Ultimate features? I'd be inclined to install Home Premium, and do an Anytime Upgrade if it turns out that the advanced features turn out to be necessary.

There is no difference between Home Premium and Ultimate, both even have the great new Windows backup imaging which makes reinstalls never again necessary.

Only with Pro do you get Virtual XP mode which just a select few XP programs need as most run in 7 anyway.

I have an old desktop and laptop running 7 with 512 mb OK, but for any business apps you would want to upgrade to at least a gig. I use them for internet browsing and Works, but 512 is stressed by the lightest weight AV like Avast, and keeps me from running gadgets without bogging.

I cannot stand to see Win7 hobbled this way since it is the first OS which NEVER bogs or hangs - you literally have to do it to yourself with too little RAM like that, less than half the minimum specs.

Gregs, right on about premium over ultimate.
I just put in premium over the ultimate and have less issues at install. Went smooth as silk!
