Help needed please

Hi
I had vista home premium and have now done a new install with windows 7. I think I might have been a bit hasty though because quite a few of the things I used are now not available. I think I might have been better doing upgrade to see what it was like first. Would it have been a great deal different? At the moment I am not liking windows 7 but it is much quicker. It is probably just the change and I will get used to it.
I see I still have a Windows.old folder, can I move any of the things in that folder to use now in 7?
What is the difference between program files and program files x 86?
Sorry if these questions have been asked before.

Thanks

Hi Kate1171

You can recover your own saved DATA FILES from windows.old.

Your programs will need to be reinstalled.

How to delete windodws.old when finished:

No, you probably did the right thing by not doing an upgrade. You could have done a "dual boot", which would have left you with both Vista and Windows 7. The problem with that is that you most likely would soon enough want to get rid of Vista, and that can cause some problems. So, you did the right thing, assuming you will become accustomed to Windows 7 over the course of a few weeks.

You might find some of your personal data (mp3s, Word documents, jpgs, etc) inside Windows.old, and you could move it over Windows 7. Keep the windows.old folder around at least temporarily.

It sounds like you did a "clean install", so you will have to reinstall your applications. Don't copy any installed applications from Windows.old over to Windows 7. Bad form. Reinstall them.

What specifically are you missing in Windows 7 that you used to have in Vista?

You apparently have a program files folder and a program files x86 folder. That implies that you have installed 64 bit windows. Any 64 bit programs you install will by default land in program files and any 32 bit programs you install will by default land in in program files x86. That's completely normal.

Hi thanks for that. I did back up my personal data so I have still got that. I have a new laptop that had Vista and I was only just getting used to it so I hadn't even looked at half of the stuff but one thing that I found quite useful was the photo gallery. It is in windows old?
Thanks
