Lost on Windows 7 Install

Computer noob here but I ordered a laptop from a laptop/PC building website without an OS to save money (poor student) as I planned on using Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro through DreamSpark but it's been causing problems with the laptop. My friend has a Windows 7 key so I'm trying to install Windows 7 now.

I'm trying to install Windows 7 via USB but I'm having some trouble. I've entered the BIOS Menu through "PC Settings" and have changed the boot order to my USB with a Windows 7 ISO copied onto it. Should UEFI be enabled or disabled in the BIOS?

With UEFI disabled and if I just let the startup run I get a black screen with "BOOTMGR is missing". If i press F7 for boot options and pick my USB, the first screen after clicking "Install Now" I get is "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a drover floppy disk, CD, DVD or USB please insert it now" even though the USB is plugged in.
With UEFI enabled and mashing F7 on startup and picking my USB, a black screen with "Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."

With a CD with the ISO burnt on and UEFI enabled, I get to the "Windows is starting" (along those lines) splash screen with the Windows color dots and it freezes. With a CD and UEFI disabled, I can get to choosing the Disk and Partition to install to but it gets stuck on "Expanding Windows files (24%)" and fails and I get Windows cannot install required files, the files may be corrupt or missing. Error code 0x80070017.

With no USB or CD in I'm stuck on the "Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" and can seem to do nothing except enter the BIOS menu (might be more options I can access that I'm unaware of)

Any help to try get me sorted would be really appreciated. I played around with settings to get to this point and can't remember everything I did but if people have questions I can answer them to the best of my abilities. Sorry for the long post!

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Use option 2 on this tutorial
USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

Bios settings should be okay so if you changed anything use optimize default and let us know how it goes,
Use a camera to take images and upload them here use the link above my signature if you need help uploading them here

Secure boot might be the only thing you need to disable but lets see what happens at default settings first.

Hayes9391 please keep in mind that your friends Windows 7 key will not work if it has been used before unless it's a Retail Key.
If it's a Retail Key it will only work if it's not used on another system at the same time it's used on your system.

From post #1.

It would be very discouraging to go through all that work and not have a proper install.

I originally made the USB with Rufus and Secure Boot is disabled, all with no luck.

The key is unused, he bought it online but did not need it in the end!

This last is the way to go. It wants to install. You can try reburning the DVD, perhaps at a slower rate. Or cleaning the DVD drive's lens. Similar problem in this thread was solved by using Universal USB installer.

Where did you get the iso file to burn ?
Everything point to a defective cd/ dvd burner and or disk
The flash drive issue point to the iso as being corrupt :/

I'd start over with a new iso
You might be able to get one from M$

If no joy you could look into these with a torrent client

Something that might be easier.

Ask your friend that gave you the COA key to also give you use the Microsoft DVD that came with that COA key.

You don`t change the boot order in the bios, you use the boot menu to choose the usb stick the 1st time and that`s it.

Setup the stick with rufus if it`s giving you problems, disable secure boot and set the bios to defaults F5

https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Clean Install Windows 7

Also, make sure you`re using a 2.0 stick and slot.

no need to buy that when you can burn it for free.

But he needs a key, you can`t use your friends key, if it`s oem it`s tied to his board, even if that board is history. But you can always try, but it`s not legal.

Your dvd is corrupt, hence your iso file is corrupt.

Create a new dvd (not cd) installer, as Mike has suggested.

Free ISO Burner

Burn it at no faster then x4 speed.
