Swapping out a dead mobo and keeping OS

I have acquired a dead Sony Vaio VGN- NW100 laptop that had been upgraded from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Hm Prem. I was able to buy a motherboard on EBAY that is the same Motherboard but the processor is a step or two better. The HDD is still intact, can I still install this mobo and be able to keep the OS activated and use it? I still have the old key for Vista but I would rather keep Win 7 than Vista. Thanks for your help.

I would call Microsoft to help with the activation. If you tell them the mobo story they will probably help.

If it was a W7 upgrade license you should be fine.

UPDATE: Swapping out a dead mobo and keeping OS

Installation, boot up and activation went fine. I just didn't realize the crap that this computer had and has taken me HOURS to de-virus (major ones) and uninstall all the unnecessary programs that it had. No doubt that this was the reason why the MB died. Thanks for all your help!

Sounds like a good time to use the built-in recovery partition and restore to factory new state to me.

Software has nothing to do with a motherboard dying :)
