Clean Install - Pro SP1 - Update, Driver Problems & High Memory Use

Been at this for a week. Re-installed multiple times.

Used legit Pro SP1 DVD & a separate SHA1 verified .ISO from USB (includes Hotfix KB2534111) - Same problems exist

Have wiped HDD multiple times using Disk Management, GParted and something else (I forget)

Webroot SecureAnywhere installed immediately after OS install: System Scans clean

    PROBLEMS:
Windows Update will not Update - no updates are retrieved
Cannot install NVIDIA driver - says no compatible hardware found
High memory usage by svchost.exe - x10 processes that range from 1,229,752K to 1,732K

    ATTEMPTED RESOLUTIONS:
    - Followed all the steps from How to Fix: Windows Update Won't Update | www.infopackets.com (uploaded PDF of the webpage for review if you don't want to check the link)
    Including: WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab, Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu, MicrosoftFixit50123.msi

    - Followed clean install instructions from Clean Install Windows 7

    - Located exact driver match for Nvidia and downloaded directly from Nvidia site

    - Scanned svchost.exe and verified location in System32 folder

Additionally, in Device Manager I have the following errors that I don't know how to identify:

System Information report written at: 03/03/16 17:37:46
    System Name: SONY-PC
    [Problem Devices]

Device PNP Device ID Error Code
Mass Storage Controller PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_803B&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_00\4&248F4965&0&1AF0 The drivers for this device are not installed.

Not Available ACPI\SNY5001\4&333BE2B1&0 The drivers for this device are not installed.

At this point after a week of Googling and following forums here and elsewhere I am at a complete loss at how to proceed.

    Hi and welcome.

First I would download and install the chipset drivers for your computer from Sony.
Then try again to install the Nvidia driver.

For Windows update, download and install KB3102810.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810

Reboot and go to Windows updates.
Let it search for a while. It takes some time.

    Hi Wugga,
    Please follow the instructions here
Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions.
Post the results and we'll go from there

For your drivers goto Sony's home page for your make/model/support/drivers,
Download them to your >>> Desktop <<<
then Driver manager> update> let me pick > browse my comp > desktop

note for my above driver instructions in firefox select save downloads to desktop in settings

    Hi PBCopter/torchwood,

Thank-you for replying. I ended up wiping the computer a few more times since posting this and I will go through each of my resolutions/continued problems.

Here is what I have tried so far.

    Resolved - Chipset Driver
I installed the Chipset drivers (INDOTH-14037700-US.EXE) from: Sony eSupport - Electronics - Drivers & Software which seemed to install okay
(please let me know how I may double check - I used CPUID ((log file attached 'SONY-PC.txt')) from: CPU-Z | Softwares | CPUID but still am not 100% I'm reading it right)

    Resolved - Nvidia Driver
I managed to install the Nvidia driver from:
    http://us.download.nvidia.com/Window...ional-whql.exe
only by doing Have Disk Method from:
    Have-Disk method for Windows 7 / Vista - Frequently Asked Questions - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
and using a modified .inf from:
    v310.90 Windows 8 64bit | NVIDIA OEM Mobile - GeForce r310 series - LaptopVideo2Go Forums

    Resolved - Additional Drivers
Apparently necessary Sony drivers I installed:
    1. Sony Shared library
    2. Setting utility series
    3. Vaio Event service
    4. Vaio Control center

    from:
    Sony Vaio VGN-AR730E drivers help!!
Drivers were sourced from link in above article from:
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/WIN7UPGRADE/

    NOT RESOLVED
Searching PCI Vendor and Device Lists yields Texas Instruments whether I search via Device or by Vendor (see screen shots attached)

So tried installing Texas Instruments® 5 in 1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD MMC MS MS PRO xD) Device Drivers (TIDOTH-12645900-US.EXE) from Sony eSupport site as the error...

    "Mass Storage Controller PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_803B&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_00\4&248F4965&0&1AF0

...indicated that this was the device when I searched and googled it, but to no avail.
I still have a error in Device Manager, even though the driver apparently installed correctly.

    PARTIAL Resolution - Windows Update
Manually installing Internet Explorer 11 seemed to boot strap the Update process initially and a TONNE of updates showed up BUT then it's back to being stalled and where I was before; where it just hangs and nothing seems to be be happening.

I received BRIEFLY error "Windows Update Error Code 80244019" which disappeared after rebooting and some additional updates had processed.

However, I had three failed updates from when Windows Updates initially worked:
    KB3118401
    KB3122155
    KB3138612

All would hang with a window saying "Preparing the Installation..." or "Searching for Windows Updates..." (screen grabs attached)

As well as KB3102810 when trying to manually install.

I was able to install ALL only by:
    1. launching explorer immediately after a reboot
    2. launching the downloaded update
(Waiting or opening any other application seemed to hinder the install. I replicated this several times)

Additionally, I installed the same way
    KB947821
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014], "Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu" from:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=20858

All installed according to the notification and I rebooted after each install.

Nothing appears to have changed. Windows Update still hangs.

I still have problems manually installing updates as well, will hang unless I do it IMMEDIATELY after log in.

I've attached log file (WindowsUpdate.log) to show Updates that been processed so far.

    Additionally:
I have tried Micrsoft Fixit, "MicrosoftFixit50123.msi" from:
Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - Windows Help

Fixit says it processed but nothing appears to have changed.

    Summary - Remaining Problems

    Windows Update still hanging

    Device Manager error still present
Mass Storage Controller PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_803B&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_00\4&248F4965&0&1AF0 The drivers for this device are not installed.

    Questions
Q: Is there any other drivers from VAIO FTP link I should install?
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/WIN7UPGRADE/
Q: Is there any drivers from the Sony esupport link I should install?

I have attached Event Viewer logs (except security as it would not upload due to file size) for additional review.

    for starters

    Hi WW,
Try this link for your driver
Gateway list two Media Card Reader drivers:
    Gateway Official Site: Worldwide
D20009-000-001.exe is the most likely driver

Although your MGAdiag is showing as Licensed, the default W7 pro code is reported, follow this to register it fully. (you will need your 25 digit code from your retail install not the original vista one)
    Genuine Microsoft Software

Your system is also showing signs of a corrupt user profile and registry handle leaks (minidumps were produced) The following tutorial will show you how to repair it and hopefully clear the leaks.
User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

The Sony update system is using java please update to the latest version.

    Hi torchwood,

Followed your steps and here is where I'm at now.

    RESOLVED - Mass Storage Controllers
The Texas Instruments drivers worked and Device Manager now shows it and no other errors - Thank-you :)

    NOT RESOLVED - Java
I downloaded and installed the latestJava but it would not verify on the Java.com website.

Tried rebooting few times and to no avail.

Checked Security settings in Java Console, Java is enabled in browser and I checked the Security settings in IE11 and it is also enabled.

    So...

    NOT RESOLVED - Licensing
I didn't bother with inputting the license key as I have been wiping this computer so many times and it is giving the 30 days trial period that I figure it shouldn't matter for the sake of Updating.

I will validate later this evening and see if it makes any difference.

PARTIALLY RESOLVED - User profile (but odd)
I followed the instructions up until Step 5 of Option 1 when I discovered that there was a User (User UpdatusUser.PNG) that didn't show in my User Account management (Visible Users.png).

I was using the Elevated Admin at the time which was the only other User account showing (User Administrator.PNG)

When I checked my C: it showed four User profiles under C: (C drive Users.PNG)
    Adminstrator
    Public
Sony (account had been deleted but folder was supposed to clear after reboot apparently)
    UpdatusUser

After creating User 'VAIO', logging off and re-booting I show now SIX User profiles under C: (After New User creation.PNG)
    Adminstrator
    Public
    Sony (still present)
    UpdatusUser
    VAIO
    VAIO.Sony-PC

I had to leave the troubleshooting at this point and I appreciate all the feedback and assistance I've been given.

    Hi,
Yep had about the same issue on a 32 bit system
This was the only way I got it fixed
Downloaded KB3083710 and KB3102810 in advance on a flash drive
Start and complete the re-install of Windows 7 SP1 without internet and do not activate windows yet I used Skip this step.

    Immediately after install is complete
    Manually install KB3083710 and restart.
    Manually install KB3102810 and restart.
Change your update setting to automatic
Uncheck Give me recommended updates the same as Important....Save.
Restore the Internet connection and activate windows
    Then after launch Windows Update.
After a few minutes, you should have plenty of updates to download and install.

    Hi Thrashzone,

I'm using 64bit system install on this laptop, will that matter?

I have downloaded the x64 versions of both KB you mentioned in advance and will give it a shot if/when I need to re-install.

    Thanks :)

    Hi,
Yes the appropriate bit would be a good thing :)
Doing the above was like night a day compared with not
It took only about 5 minutes to fine 210 total updates

Another thing is if you see this update make sure it is not installed with any other updates
It needs to be installed all by it's self
It was not uncheck automatically which caused many others to fail to install
