Can't perform windows update on new Win 7 install

I just installed windows 7 on an old Dell Inspiron
I noticed that I was not getting the normal updates so I went to the action centre
the action centre showed a dialog box with a red X saying:

Check for updates for your computer
Always install the latest updates to enhance your computers security and performance.
When I do go for "check for updates" it just searches and never finds anything

Can any one help me to correct this error

I was advised to just leave it running overnight and that worked - all the updates were there ready to install next morning.

If you don`t want Windows 10, don`t install any Windows 10 updates, or just install the GWX Control Panel.
