Registration Key Quandry

I purchased a new laptop with Windows Home Premium 64-bit and purchase the upgrade to Win 7 Pro.

About 2 weeks later, the harddrive went bad, and I had to have the laptop replaced with a new one. I upgraded the new laptop to Win 7 Pro.

Now, my system info page says that I must register my key code by tomorrow or certain functionality will be lost. I attempted to enter the key code on the bottom of my laptop and the key code for my Win 7 Pro upgrade and neither works.

Does this mean I need to re-install my original Windows 7 and start over or is there some way to avoid this? I just got through reinstalling all of my software and running a Carbonite restore for all of my data files. I hope I don't need to do this a third time.

Thanks, Richard. I'll wait for it to expire and hope ASUS can take care of me in a timely fashion.

Why wait? Contact ASUS now. You could also contact MS now and see what they can do to help you.

If i'm not mistaken your getting the "Invalid License Key" error correct?

if that's the case its an easy fix just call MS to re-load your Product Key. The process is real easy, no re-installation required and the whole process just takes 10mins. over the phone

Why were you attempting to insert the Vista OEM license key from the bottom of your laptopto license a Window 7 Pro Upgrade you purchased and installed over Vista?

You said you reinstalled your Win7 Pro Upgrade after replacing the hard drive. You should have put your Win7 Upgrade key in then, and activated when you got online.

Find your Win7 Pro Upgrade package and get the license key off the card insert, insert it in the activation link at Computer>Properties. It should auto-activate or require a quick robo call to MS.

Otherwise, then run the Win7 installer from the desktop to do a Repair install, which is an in-place Upgrade over itself which should allow you to insert the Windows 7 key.

Thanks to all of the responses to my upgrade issue.

I contacted Asus and they were able to provide me with an updated product key and I'm back in business. Kudos to Asus. I was immediately greeted by a knowledeable lady (as opposed to a painful automated phone process). She had to go off line for a few minutes to talk to with one of her tech experts, but came back with an updated key to get me running again.

Plus, I was able to set up a date with her next weekend (gotcha - just kiddin').
