    Dual boot issue

    Hello,

I currently have Windows 7 Home Premium x64 installed as OS and I want to dual boot a Windows XP Professional x86.
So I prepared everything in Win7 as mentioned in this tutorial, inserted my XP disc (original disc), and then booted into the OS installation.
Whilst in pre-install, everything is being loaded, but as soon as the screen turns black to display the select-a-partition-screen, I suddenly get a blue screen displaying a Windows error (Windows need to be shut down in order to prevail important information from being lost, blabla).

    Anyone knows why this happens?

    Thanks

PS: Installing XP using the same disc as a VM in Win7 did succeed.

When you say you "booted into the OS installation" does this mean you ran the XP installer from Win7 OS, or booted into the XP installer?

A 32 bit installer cannot be run from 64 bit environment and vice-versa.

Did you pre-format the intended XP partition using Win7 formatting? These are incompatible.

Boot into the XP installer, delete any preformatted partition, create new, and format NTFS.

I booted the XP installer through BIOS.
I followed the steps described in Brink's tutorial (Win7 installed first, then XP), so yes I already created a NTFS partition for XP.

That's the problem! The installer doesn't manage to display the partition screen... instead it returns the error.

Perform gregrockers steps with the W7 DVD instead???
Can you invoke XP setup.exe from within W7 (as opposed to booting from)?

The blue screen you got is the same screen I got. I have a feeling it is because the second partition I have is a logical partition instead of a primary one. In another post I asked for a remedy to this (the three partitions are an OME partition, the recovery partition, and the c drive (windows 7 os) partition. The second one I shrank and created following the instructions in Brinks tutorial but it is a logical drive. Since I wanted to do the dual boot to run XP to use pro tools recording software...I was convinced that it would be less of a headache to buy(use, find) software that is compatable to windows 7. By nature I still want to know what I did wrong (ie. why did it not work).

Please download free Partition Wizard and make a screenshot using Snipping tool in Start Menu, posted back here using paper clip in reply box.

When was the last time you successfully installed using your XP CD? Check its condition.

Im at work right now so I'm away from my home computer but this is exactly the same blue screen I get as well. The xp disk was used about 6 months ago on an older computer. It is and has been in the package it comes in...no scratches or anything. Is there a way I can change the recovery partition to somthing other than primary...or this OEM partition?
