I don't know about SURT but the following will resolve the Windows update problem.

    Follow these instructions exactly.
First, set Windows Updates to never check for Updates.
Next reboot your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
    Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal. You can then reset your updates to automatically check for updates if desired

I just had a update issue, solved with a big help from my friends.
    As PB mentioned, install:
    KB3020369 is first
    KB3125574 is second
    KB3172605 is last.

KB3125574: open the link with IE
    Microsoft Update Catalog
Go to Services - Windows Update - Disable.
    - Reboot
    Install KB3125574
Go to Services - Windows Update - Enable.

Thanks Megahertz07. Yes, I understood that microsoft is boycotting chrome and when I launched ie8 which came with my w7 in order to access the "catalog", it said I should update to ie11. I downloaded ie11 (with chrome) and installed it and guess what? windows started to install 155 updates (now installing #95)... so I am wondering if the solution to the broken update is not simply to update ie :)

Ill come back to report if this update is 100% working now (as much as 100% is possible with IT)

It was the KB3172605 that fixed the Windows Update.

opened with ie11 Microsoft update catalog, it says
"this web site want to install Microsoft update catalog"
    -> Install
->"add on from this web site failed to run"

    Any idea?

    Thanks for your time

Ran ie again but as admin. This time I could download KB3125574. There are 3 versions
    1) x86 win 7
    2) amd64 server 2008 r2
    3) amd44 win 7

since i have win7 64, I tried to install amd44 win 7 though my processor is Intel(!) I got the red cross message Installer encountered an error 0280070422 the service cannot be started either because it is disabled bla bla ... so I set the update service to auto and relaunched.

Now many updates have been installed and more are waitng that I restart the machine.

A big thanks to you pbcopter and to Megahertz07.
