Help me with my upgrade to Windows 7 (Freezing Issue)

I have a newer computer that has Vista 64 Ultimate on it. Microsoft sent me a upgrade DVD for Window 7 64 Ultimate.
I have ran the upgrade advisor and got no problems except for the fact that Ultimate Extras would not be supported in Windows 7 and also that Windows mail would not be supported.
So anyway the story goes like this:

    Hi,
I recently received the upgrade for Windows 7 Ultimate from Microsoft for free because I had recently purchase Windows Vista Ultimate (64 Bit).
I have a newer computer which is made up of a ASUS P5N-D Motherboard (775 socket Intel)
Core 2 Quad 6700 Intel CPU
    8 Gigs of RAM
    DVD Writer Optical Drive
plus good video card XFX 9800 GTX 512 onboard memory (Nvidia Chipset)
I go and try to upgrade from Windows Vista 64 Bit Ultimate to Windows 7 64 Bit Ultimate, and it hangs a 1% and the DVD does not spin anymore after that, but the hard drive does. After a wait of about a half hour, the hard drive stops to spin and the system just hangs there stating " Copying windows installation files to your computer (27 of 2728 MB copied)
which equals the aformentioned 1% copying windows files.
I have removed my ESET Antivirus completely by uninstalling it all together.
Any help would be appreciated as I have been at this all day and I don't want to have to try to do anything without some direction as it would probably be a waste of time compared to some good advice on which way to troubleshoot.
I am sort of leaning toward the DVD drive being the problem, but I am not sure.

    No Antivirus running
Sometimes stalls at different points of execution.
ie: When executable is run, it says" loading temporary windows files" sometimes it will stall there at that point.
Other times it will go to the point where it will let you decide if you want to "upgrade" or "custom" install
Another big thing is that after this stall happens. A hard boot or reset is necessary to get rid of the installer program. to be more percise, you cannot access task manager or right click on the window on the task bar to close the installer down.

The only other thing I can add is that on my motheboard manufacturer website I see a seperate chipset driver for Windows 7 that is different from Windows Vista driver. I am wondering if that is what is causing the freezing issue?

Any help is much appreciated and I thank you in advance as I am trying to get the new OS installed.

You are trying an upgrade by starting the install from within your existing operating system?

Or are you trying a clean install by booting from the Windows 7 disc?

    Upgrade not custom

Vista to Win7 saving all files.
I might just wipe everything out though and go custom seeing as how this being such a hassle for me.

    Hi Instant Coffee..
A clean install is always preferred over an upgrade everytime...Update the chipset driver as mentioned.... remove everything that is not necessary to install the OS.. 1 stick of RAM, 1 Hard Drive, 1 monitor, keyboard and mouse... then reinstall.. let us know what happens...

Clean install is generally preferred, but I have no idea if it will solve your problem.

    Hi Instant Coffee
How is your monitor connected, DVI or D-Sub (VGA)? Try D-Sub
There is a variety of things that could be happening, let's start by these questions

    Okay,
I just decided to go with a clean install from my upgrade DVD.
I'm not going to bother pulling any ram as it should work with it all in there.
I will just reformat my drive I guess and pop in the upgrade dvd and it should let me install and input the key right? I mean even though at that point there will be no previous windows installation on the hard drive?
Wait I'm confused all of a sudden. I don't think that will work without some form of Windows on the hard drive.
I think on second thought I will just try to custom install without manually formating my drive first.
I would rather wipe everything out though if that is at all plausible.
    What do you think?

It's hooked up through DVI, but why would that do anything bad? I mean it's just a monitor.

Boot from the Windows disc. Choose custom install. When you come to the partition screen choose drive options/advanced. You can delete all partitions at the next screen.

You don't need a previous OS install. The upgrade disc will work fine.

Okay thats what I will do. I just had a bunch of stuff on there from before, but I guess I will just reinstall everything again.
Thanks and I will let you know how it goes.
