    Setup Failed

Alright, well my dad has some programs and stuff that he didn't want to get messed up with Windows 7 installation, so last night I installed it while he was sleeping so he couldn't say no. I did an upgrade and went to sleep. Today I woke up and it says the upgrade failed, reverting back or something, then it restarts and gives me two options. Windows 7 and Windows 7 backup or something. Windows 7 just boots into windows then gives me an error message about restarting the computer with vista and the setup just loops back to the failed upgrade. I feel almost sick because my dad is going to be extremely mad about this as well as the rest of my family. We essentially have a broken computer and my parents need it for email and my dads programs. What can I do? is there anything I can do without a clean install because I can't loose this data. I never thought I'd run into this problem. I feel so bad.

    Hi and welcome

It is something you are going to have to face. If I were you I would wait. Anything you do now will make it worse. If he decides to we can help him. I would not try and restore now because you may destroy the data.

What I would do at this point is call the nearest Geek Squad on their Best Buy phone line and ask them if they can bail you out, then ask them if they can do it now (or when), then take the laptop, charger, Win7 and any program disks over there and have them retrieve the data and install.

The cost of this is the price of failing to back up your data, which is the first thing one does when upgrading or installing. Had you saved your data we could help you clean install right now.

You should first tell your folks what happened and propose to them this course of action. If you offer to pay it might make it easier on you. You can also tell them we can help here to retrieve data and/or recover the Upgrade if possible.

But the only sure thing I can think of now, in your situation, is the ever-ready Geek Squad.
