Now its updated but I noticed in the windows/old I have several versions now numbered /2 etc.

So can I just delete all but the first windows.old.?

Did you upgrade from the previous version of Windows or Edition? If you have no important files in that folder then you can safely delete it.

You didn`t do a custom clean install.

You can delete the entire windows.old folder if you don`t want it.

Use Disk Cleanup (Run as Admin ) and choose to Clean up System Files, if you have trouble getting rid of the entire windows.old folder just come back and let us know.

Not sure what a clean install is. I looked for format on google as prior when doing this some time back - formatted the HD then inserted disc etc. So this time just followed recovery advanced etc. And then had a bit of a time and reinstalled it over and ended up with more than one old folder. OK.

Thanks for advice re can delete. Will as backed up on sep HD all I wanted. And its the old that made me have to go and get ISO file in the end.

A clean install is when you delete the drive to unallocated space or format the install partition you intend to reinstall windows on. You must choose Custom in order to do that during the install.

When you do that you don`t end up with any windows.old folder/s

    Step 6 in the tutorial.

Ok thanks for that - am 100% sure I will be using this some time in my future as via several different computers over time always seem to get problems cant fix and so do re-install. Should have come and read the tutorial before doing it.

Both my discs are problematic - 64 bit Family pack upgrade fm XP was corrupted. And bought a new disc fm bloke who sold me the gigabyte which has been good and still is, in spite of me!
So thinking of buying a new disc just in case for future easier than these ISO files and saw on E Bay quite a few varying prices but some full version and some retail.
What does that mean and which to buy. Any info helpful as late comer to windows on retirement. And due to hit the big 80 soon.

I would not buy any operating system off Ebay.

    All you need is oem.

You should be creating disk images when you have windows fully updated and running perfect and all your software installed, so you don`t have to keep reinstalling.

If all you need is a new disc, then don`t buy a new one, download the Iso file from here and burn to dvd at the slowest possible speed.

ADDRAM on reinstall W7 64 bit and windows old

:) Hey please accept grateful thanks for such good info - have book marked the lot after a read through, would have made life easier than going to M$ and hoping as I am sure many do. As they are not the easiest to deal with for instance I had problems with getting verification for the ISO file.
And although I have followed all - my current version of W7 Home premium isnt exactly like it was nor does it match my lap top which was easy as a Toshiba and they had a factory reset which did the lot, all I had to do them was download the updates after SP1.

But success yesterday as was able to download updated version of Avast free, and it took a while to do like left it for an hour to install, but installed and working.

I had tried using on old and new versions Avira, AVG, AV none of whom compared to Avast so did a restore point on new W7 pc and went for it. Also later did the lap top and its now Avast again.
Using Windows firewall currently on pc and ZA Firewall on Lap top.Was using Online Armour for years, even though not supported but they have closed down portal for getting licence accepted so sadly need to buy it along with the rest of the bundle and its not cheap when on limited income.
I have read Windows firewall is good enough these days. But miss the info OA used to feed me. And Emisoft isnt top of Antivirus but top or close too on price!
    Again thanks

You don`t need to buy any Anti Virus or Antimalware for Windows 7

Just use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Antimalware, both are free.

If you like Avast and it`s free, that`s fine too, I`ve never used it.

    Download and install version 2.2

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Download

And remember, don`t install any other garbage if offered :)
