normal install time
I have install w7 many times in the past. I have always done a fresh install. I bought a new copy for my internet computer and would like to do an upgrade install, I don't want to reload all the software.
So from my current windows vista I ran the upgrade/install and it gets to a point after it gathered all the information at the start of the install and it is copying files and it stays on 0% copied for what seemed like hours. Is this normal during an upgrade install? |

I'm trying it again and like last night it is taking a long time while it is searching for installation updates. Eventually it collects the information. It is at the end of the 1st part before going to "2 installing Windows" that I I first posted about, although it sure seems stuck here too.

I ended up cancelling the install like last night. I restarted it this time without using the internet for installation updates and it seems to be working. Seems like the is an issue with using the internet for updates.

Hi, I understand it is a pain in the rear and it takes days to complete.
However it would be far beneficial to do a fresh install. Then from the PC tech mans bible learn how to take Images, then you will have more time to enjoy tea and scones. Have you disconnected all but the OS drive. |

You can not upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 to the best of my knowledge.
You can do a Clean install with the proper DVD and matching COA key. Jack |

Actually Jack, you can upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, but you need the upgrade disc & I doubt if there are any still available.
I did this to my Vista computer in 2010. The Upgrade disc could be purchased & installed over the top of Vista. I have also used that Upgrade disc to install Windows 7 as a fresh install, but I had problems getting it activated, which required a call to a good technician at MS to sort it out. |

Yes I believe you are correct if one has the very old Vista upgrade disk. It's been so long ago that those disk were available the only way to find out if they will still work would be give it a try.
I really don't know if Microsoft still honors the upgrade disk anymore. No such disk was mentioned in the OP post. Jack |

The best way is to make a fresh install rather than upgrading it, I still cant understand y you really need to upgrade it other than making a new install.

I would do a clean install :-) Ok it's a pain having to source drivers etc on a usb stick first but - Windows will install most of the drivers for you.
When I do a clean install I opt not to connect to the internet during install. I like to be in control of things lol. And start the updates when I'm ready and after antivirus installed. Windows 7 will find just about all the drivers you need. Do have driver downloads for your laptop? Just in case there is the odd one missing? As for software the laptop came with (programs and so on) forget it - you won't miss them and there will be better alternatives. For ages I used recovery disks to reinstall and laboriously deleted all the junk, just so I could keep roxio dvd burner - because I liked it. Now I've done a clean install I have an extra 60GB of space on my hard drive and Windows burns the dvd's very well - I don't need Roxio - even if it did look pretty lol. What laptop is it? |

Windows 7 X64 USB installation - Is this a 'normal' delay time? Every time I install Windows 7 X64 (or X86) from USB I get two unexplainable delays for no apparent reason and I wondered if this was normal or just my system? OK, I boot up and the files are copied from the USB to the PC. Fine. Then there's at least a 5 minute delay before the language choice... |

Is it normal for MsMpEng to eat up 25% of the my CPU all the time? It's not only during scans, it is all the time. Also people told me that it is windows defender but I think it is actually Windows Security Essentials, or is it the same thing? |
