    (re-)Installation of IE11 fails with 80073715 errors

    Hi, y'all

Machine is Win7 x64 fully updated.
It's been running slow for months, particularly IE, so I thought I'd 'repair' IE by unstalling IE11, and reinstalling it.

    Uninstall went fine.

Re-installing from the offline installer fails - apparently when attempting to install 'required updates' - I've checked and all the required updates are either installed, or 'not required' when I do attempt to install them

The two 'not required' updates are KB2731771 and KB2966583

Looking in the event logs, and the CBS logs, it's apparently tripping over on the following pooint in the installation of one of the updates...
    Code:

Anyone have any bright ideas how to install IE11?

(BTW - Windows Update doesn't flag it up as an available update, and I can find no trace of IE10 or earlier !!)

    Don't laugh Noel.

What I had to do a couple installs ago, was to install Firefox and use it to download I.E. 11.
I know its strange but it worked and I don't know why.

I have also had a problem installing I.E. 11 if the system was not activated. Or for whatever reason lost it's activation.

I do not have KB2731771 installed.

    I do have KB2731771 installed

    I did find this.

From my low tech 3 brain cells; it smells like a Repair Install to me.
Have you verified that SP-1 is installed?

    P/S:
Malwarebytes blocks other sites that state they have a repair for this problem.

I'm not understanding the Vista Plus.

No bright ideas. There's this tutorial on uninstalling:

Internet Explorer 11 - Uninstall in Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

On another note I did have a problem with windows update offering IE10 to install when I've had IE11 installed for ages. It was down to some problem with files in WINSXS. Solution was to disable windows update. Run advanced disk cleanup to include windows update cleanup and reboot. In theory it removes stuff you don't need from WINSXS allowing updates to work properly again.

I'm nowhere near expert on this.

I reckon when you uninstalled IE11it must have left files in WINSXS which windows thinks are still active components?

    Ie11

Hello Layback Bear, I had to do the same thing on my last install. I ended up with IE8, and managed to

install Firefox and download IE11 from Firefox. It is weird.

    Thanks, guys.
I forgot to mention that I have run SFC and CheckSUR and neither found any significant problems (there is one error in SFC that doesn't relate, and which is present in all Dell builds, which I haven't bothered correcting.)

Yes, SP1 is installed and the system is activated.

It seems that IE has been completely uninstalled!

I eventually discovered the cause of the reinstall problem - 4 Manifest files were still present in the winsxs folder, and these messed things up.
Once I deleted them the install went smoothly.

... it doesn't appear to have improved the performance much

    Happy days are here again.
    Good job Noel.

    Just a question.
Would running the built in Disk Cleanup after removing I.E. and then installing I.E. again be helpful.

I'm thinking that the problem 4 Manifest files in 'winsxs' might of got cleaned.

    Just thinking.

It is a thought - although the Deep Clean would have needed to be run after the uninstall. I'm not certain whether their presence was I the result of running the install while something else was going on (i.e. some form of install), or whether they were leftovers from the original install.
This particular machine has had problems for a long while - ever since it got an infection a couple of years back which took a long while to isolate. It's my boss's machine, and I'm hoping that he'll get a new one and pass this one on to me for work

Obviously it's not the proper time to fix things to good.
After the gifting, and at your leisure a Clean Install would work.

One never know what a infection or a users tinkering has done to a system.
