You can just run it on a currently installed system.
Or you can use a command to point to a wim file image you want to update:
e.g.
C:\UpdatePack7R2-17.9.15.exe /ie11 /WimFile=K:\GRMCULXFRER_EN_DVD\sources\install.wim /Index=3
It takes a while to mount wim image , install 200+ updates, unmount the image,.
So if you want to update all 4 ( or 5 for x86 ) images, there is a workaround. Just update image 1, make several copies and change the editions using dism.
Here is a dism gui to make changing editions simple
dism7.zip
Thank you Siw, going to have a look.
Note to self: After spending 3 days getting to this point, don't attempt to restore your W10 backup to your W7 machine, as it thinks you're a different person and creates a different profile etc, and it's all a bit of a mess
Well, interestingly, after a couple of days with W7, I’m beginning to suspect it’s a combination of things which were crap, rather than simply W10. The touchpad is SH*TE (are you allowed to swear on this forum, when talking about W10?) on this machine (HP Envy 15), which I chose for all sorts of reasons, such as having an illuminated keyboard (I tend to do emails and things sitting in the dark watching telly).
Some of the websites I spend too much time on (eg dating) are also unresponsive – they just “unrespond” in different ways with W7. Who knows, after all that, I might end up going back to 10 in the end… GAAHHHHH.
I’m enormously grateful for all your help though (especially Megahertz) – I was determined to do this, and wouldn’t have got anywhere without you.
I’ll let you know what I decide after a few days…
Howgweed, don't give up on Win 7. It's a much better OS than Win 10.
You've done a great job. The idea of begin installation on the other laptop was brilliant. It's now on my solutions list.
The websites you spend too much time on (eg dating) that are also unresponsive, doesn't have nothing to do with Win 7 or Win 10. Do you have now Internet Explorer 11?
I don't like Internet Explorer (have it as some crap sites use some features that only run with IE) or Chrome. I've been using Firefox for almost 20 years and I'm happy with it.

Did you downloaded Win 7 Pro SP1 with the provided link? Did you see the SP2 from the link?
It could be your browser. A lot of sites cause trouble coz of all the advertizing and tracking crap. Trying a different browser may help.
Brave might be worth a try, or Opera.

Funny, think I was one of the first ever users of Opera, as it was the only one which had a pop-up blocker a million years ago. But I REALLY like Firefox - as you get older (I'm 62), you don't like to change things unless there's a REALLY good reason
I also use Adbock, so it's a long time since I last saw an advert
No, sorry, didn't get around to downloading your image I should say I'm in the process of a very challenging house renovation at the moment, having moved back to Ireland from England after 35 years, so I'm... errmmm... a little stressed
I have IE, but I would never use it - (a) because it's Microsoft and they want me to, (b) it doesn't have Adblock, which is one of the most wonderful things in the world.
I did however image my HDD after a installing SP1 and a million updates, using EaseUS ToDo backup thingy, so hopefully would be easy to restore in the future. But if you care to put the ISO up again, I've relaxed a bit now
