Megahertz07: I agree with your comment about moving the users folder. I found this approach, lifehacker.com/5467758/move-the-users-directory-in-windows-7, which seems quite a bit easier than the one you posted (and, I believe, is akin to the approach I used last time I set up a computer), but I will try the one you suggested instead. With regard to WU and KabyLake, check out the link in Alejandro85 original reply - I am planning to use that 'patch'.

I've seen the Lifehaker post to move \users to D: . "The only quirk is that accessing the Users folder from the C: drive (for example) appears as "C:" when it's actually on "D:".
I can say that Kari tutorial works without a problem as I have done it on my computer.

Regarding the updates, Automatic updates has installed a lot of "Updates" that made WU to not work anymore, not to mention the spy features and blocking WU on Kabylake.
So my suggestion is to turn it off and install the SP2 and Security only updates. For Office run WU manually and choose those updates you want to install.

Quick update: The new machine arrived on Wed and I have been working on it for several days. I was able to install Win 7 Pro x64 (using the Noticias distro) without incident. (I had to first tweak the BIOS to be able to boot from a USB drive - after that, everything went smoothly.) Essentially no issues with the device drivers - with the Intel drivers, the key is to find the most recent version that supports Win 7 - in the case of the video driver, this Fix for Windows 7 drivers for Intel 7th gen HD graphics 620 610 615 630 Iris 640 650 - YouTube is quite helpful.

I have installed most of the needed apps, disabled all of the unwanted tasks, etc. Almost ready to start using it.

I did run the Novabench on both my desktop (Intel core i&-860 with ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics) and the new notebook computer (Intel core i7-7700HQ with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050). The notebook beat the desktop in every category and smoked it on the graphics test.
