Installing Windows 7 on a system that already has Windows 10

If I've got a win-10 system and I want to install win-7 from a bootable thumb drive, will the win-7 installation process correctly configure the (single) hard drive for dual-boot and preserve the existing win-10 setup? Would I have to create a new partition on the existing hard drive first to do this (and can that be done from win-10)?

(there doesn't seem to be a lot available on the internet regarding this question - mostly searches end up
being about discussions regarding installing windows 10 over-top or in place of windows 7. What I have seen is that if I free up some space on the exiting drive to create a new partition, then I can install win-7 on it but might have to mess with the MBR to get the pc to show a boot-menu, so I'm asking here if for sure that will happen or is there a way to avoid that.)

You always install the old system first as if you do it second it won't understand the boot scheme. A lot depends on your disk type is it mbr gpt uefi? The simple way is to run seven as a virtual PC. Installing seven last will destroy tens boot depending on disk system. It would be a wise move to create a disk image before doing anything so you can role back

You didn't give us the hardware specs of the new computer so it is hard to us to give specific help.
- On BIOS you must disable Secure Boot.
- Under Win 10, open disk management and shrink the C: partition till you have an unallocated partition of 85G. See if the disk has a Efi partition (it will probably do).
- During POST, launch the boot menu. It will give a option to boot win 10 and two options to boot the win 7 installation USB drive: Legacy and UEFI. Choose UEFI, go to install and choose the unallocated partition you created and proceed.
As it is on same drive, the Windows boot loader will have two options win 10 and Win 7.
