    ACPI non-compliance


    Hello Folks!

    I have been pulling my hair out for over 3 days... I am at my wits end! I have probably spend over 20 hours on this. I am tech savvy enough, but this has me beaten. And yes, I have read various sites,... superuser, stack-exchange, blogs, etc.

    The problem: The BIOS in this system (laptop) is not fully ACPI compliant!

    This happens when I run a Windows X64 installation
    Original media: en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso
    USB key software for installation: YUMI [I have installed Windows 10, PoPOS] run Ubuntu Gnome without problems]

    The laptop in new... has UEFI disabled, fastboot [when it showed] disabled) and secure boot disabled.
    What it came with was a linux distro with an EFI partition... I (moronically) wiped the disk clean, formatted disk to MBR, disabled UEFI and tried Win 7.

    I tried with an Win 7 USB key that had ONE installer with both x86 and x64 ISOs, but now I am only trying with x64. This laptop is very new. What can I do? Am I screwed... windows 10 only?

    Reason I am still pursuing this is that either "I" (OR laptop owner) go LINUX or stick to Win 7 even after 2020.

    What is the make/model of the lappy your trying to install W7 on
    Why are you using Yumi - indicates dual boot - W7 hates being no2
    Where did you get the install media

    You may require non standard W7 drivers for USB3 or Skylake chipset

    Make/Model -- System 76 Gazelle [12]... If I had to guess from F2 putting me into BIOS, I would say it is a SONY model.

    YUMI is just the software on a USB stick used to install distros including linux... I have used it to install Windows 7 (x86 and x64 many times), but possibly never on a UEFI machine. Not sure if my old gazelle has UEFI/was UEFI enabled, when I put 7 on it. If I shouldn't use YUMI, what should I use to try and put 7 on the lap?

    The USB formatted in FAT32 worked when I installed Windows 10... The USB port I am using is black [USB 2 I think], and not blue (USB 3). I will have to reinstall windows 10 and take a SIW / Speccy diagnostic [and keep it for future reference] to know whether that port is actually USB 2. Non standard W7 drivers for USB 3... if needed, where do I get them and where do I put them?

    Witch CPU is on the laptop?
    On BIOS, set:
    - UEFI to enabled
    - Secure boot and fast Boot to disabled.

    Create a UEFI boot able disk
    UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows | Eight Forums
    UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Help Forums

    Use Rufus to create a UEFI boot able Win 7 installation disk (Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way).
    Launch boot menu and boot from the USB disk. Select UEFI option.
    Go to install and delete all partitions - Create new
    It will create
    - 100M UEFI FAT32 partition.
    - 120M M$ Reserved RAW partition
    - Large NTSF partition.
    Install on the large NTFS partition.

    New Skylake and Kabylake chipsets require some drivers (USB3.x and SATA) that aren't on Win 7 installation disk. You won't have mouse and /or keyboard when you boot the Win 7 installation disk.
    You will have to add those drivers to the Win 7 installation disk.

    TWO things are different from your situation:
    I do have ONE USB 2.0 port as suspected by black color as opposed to blue. Confirmed using lsusb command in linux terminal which shows one bus as 2.0 root hub.
    My Windows 7 media does have SP 1 included...

    At the moment, I wanted to quickly slap win 7 on the stick using Rufus and try. Stick shows up in BIOS, but does not even boot.
    Witch CPU is on the laptop? INTEL CORE i3 7GEN

    My mobo is kaby :-(

    In the meantime, I was able to use YUMI UEFI (first time), create a Win 10 USB stick and install it in UEFI mode. I even rebooted to alter UEFI Firmware settings (which basically looks like BIOS).

    Problem using Rufus: I have never used it before,… so, questions:

    1. 1. Am I creating the bootable USB with Win 7 all in one go or is it a two-step process? First prep the USB, then add the ISO?

     2. 2. Partition scheme and target type…? MBR for BIOS/UEFI? MBR for UEFI? OR GPT for UEFI? Because if I select WIN7 ISO, it goes to the first, MBR for BIOS/UEFI

     3. 3. Filesystem FAT32 or NTFS? If I select the Win7 ISO, it goes to NTFS

     4. 4. Scratch 1, 2, 3 – I was able to create a bootable USB in ONE go, with GPT for UEFI, FAT32 while selecting Win 7 ISO (untouched)…

     5. 5. On trying with above settings, I was able to get a Windows Boot Manager Error

     6. 6. This tells me that I have to do what you said, unzip, modify efi file at least (and insert drivers?), rezip… OR can I modify file/insert drivers in the Rufus created USB?

    Please be patient... this is a lot of work : ) and let me know if there are things I can skip... Thanks!

    There is a simple way to create a UEFI Win 7 installation USB flash disk.
    - Format a USB flash disk (at least 4G) as Fat32
    - Copy all iso files and folders to the USB flash disk.
    - The efi/boot has to be added to the installation, it isn't provided by M$.

    Unless the laptop has a USB2.0 hardware, the kabylake chipset requires the USB3.0 drivers and you need to add them to the win 7 installation disk or when you boot you will have no mouse and /or keyboard.

    First, apologies... I totally missed the first two links in post #4 above... (to create a UEFI bootable disk). I have done the first,... the second, working on it :)

    I am going to use the USB stick with Windows 7 on it (created using Rufus, for now). It already has the efix64.efi file in /efi/boot

    I understand about the drivers...
    USB3 CHECK
    SATA CHECK
    mouse and keyboard ... you provided the same link to SATA. Was it a mistake? And, where do I put this? Under "Other" folder?

    I went to your source thread and found NVMe driver... and have used it, since I am going to install on an M2 drive.

    Question1: I have put all the drivers under Drives7/Boot/[USB3|SATA|NVMe|Other]. Is this right?
    Question2: Do I have to run the commands CLEAN, MOUNT and BOOT? Basically, do I have to follow that complete tutorial?

    Sorry, my mistake.
    Use the Download Windows 7* USB 3.0 Creator Utility to add the USB drivers to the installation disk.
    Put the SATA and NVMe on another USB flash drive.
    Boot from the Win 7 installation disk as UEFI (with USB3 drivers added) and go to install. When it says there is a CD/DVD driver missing, browse to the other USB flash drive with the SATA and NVMe drivers.

    The Intel utility only add USB3 drivers to the installation wizard and during installation you have to provide the SATA and NVMe.
    You will end with a Win 7 installation without those drivers (no mouse). On my tutorial I explain how to add the drivers to:
    - Installation Wizard
    - Maintenance Wizard
    - To the Windows you are installing.

    I read Payton's tutorial about inserting USB drivers. I think I understand the whole thing now.

    -Use Rufus to create an UEFI bootable disk.
    -Then, I need to patch Windows7 boot.wim and install.wim... basically, slipstream USB3 and other drivers into the boot media.

    I am going to use your tools and drivers and follow your method... and report back.

I have windows 7 enterprise x64 installed on my machine. I've been having troubles for a while. Many updates don't install, and device drivers won't install when a new device is plugged in (extremely annoying).
