Info on W7 Upgrade Path - Purchasing Right COA

Ok, I got another computer that has W10 upgraded from 8. I removed the 500 GB drive from the old computer and will use it as the C: drive to the new one. I cloned a 80 gb I had for back ups through a usb case. I damaged the boot 0f the 500 gb and repaired it using a repair cd. I have my own copy of W7 home premium and tried to repair it with that and it said not the right version for some reason. Anyway I want to leave the activation code with the 80 gb as I installed the 80 GB in the old computer a it works fine online and downloaded updates. I would like to purchase my own code for the 500 gb drive that I am using in the new computer. It gives an option to change codes in the sys. properties. How do I find the right code needed to have my own activation for the new computer. Am I making myself clear in what I;m asking for ? I'm an older gent and not always computer literate. Thanks. GBY

    Hi GBY,

it depends on what type of W7 licence you have if its Retail then you DO NOT have a problem
System builder is a little more problematic, straight OEM then unfortunately its time to buy a new licence.

Roy, thanks for getting back. The W7 home premium disk I have is retail from a computer I sold over a year ago. Is there anyway to find out what the license is by by searching in the W7 files ?

    Hi GBY,

Belarc will provide with the full code - DO NOT POST it, and any other keys/passwords on a WORKING system
Belarc - System Management For The Internet Age. Software license management, IT asset management, IT security, Cyber Security.

Retail discs come in a package with the COA (activation key) sticker attached, still got it??
You stated you sold the computer on - if you sold it as a working Activated machine then the purchaser is using that key - IT CANNOT be used on 2 computers at the same time.

I have belarc and know the full code. I don't even know the code for the older/sold computer but still have the retail disk. I understand the not using two codes, that is why I want to get my own code for using the 500gb W7 drive in my new computer and sell the old one with the code that it came with. I just cloned the drive on an 80 gb I had. Does belarc tell if it was retail or upgrade version. I don't now if it was upgraded from Vista or washed and had a fresh install. The code sticker on the one I'm selling says windows vista business.
