Upgraded to W10 from W7 and now want to rollback to W7.

Why do you want to roll back? honestly if you can stay on 10 you should.

Even though a rollback option is available for "some time" (an arbitrary limitation) the best option would be to simply reformat and reinstall 7 from scratch so you have a sane system again. You cannot trust entirely that the system would be rolled back at the very same state it was after a major upgrade like that.

Out of topic, the inverse is also true. For changing from Win7 to Win10 a clean install is also preferable, giving a pristine Win10 system without any Win7 leftover that won't do you any good.

Even though asking the reasons behind such a move is good for some background, I'm puzzled why one should stay in a non-prefered environment, even if the reasons against it are strong enough.

I've been running these sites long enough to see the the trouble running an out of date OS can cause a user in the long run with browsers, AV and other software stopping supporting it, the smart move, if you can is upgrade and save the headaches.

I'm guessing Mike made the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 within the last 5 days.

Every upgrade I did, none of which were clean installs, were done with a hardware migration, meaning I kept the old OS drive as a backup. I still have my XP HDD from 2014 and my 32-bit 7 SSD. My 64-bit 7 SSD will be shelved in the same manner. It came in handy recently when I tried and failed multiple times to get my system working on modern hardware before finally succeeding. It's also great for bringing back memories, I was able to recover a few photos and game save files that I accidentally deleted.

You should've kept a backup. But if you insist on rolling back and your period is up, you can use something like PCMover to migrate from 10 to 7 while keeping your files and most of your settings.

If you still have the product key for Windows 7 I suggest you just reinstall Windows 7 and activate it with that key. That is what I did.

I did the free upgrade from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro in July 2023 on an old laptop. I eventually decided that Windows 10 on it was just too slow. I replaced the hard drive with a different one and reinstalled Windows 7 Pro. It activated fine with the Windows 7 key I had.

I am glad I kept the hard drive with Windows 10 because last September Microsoft started blocking all attempts for people to do the free upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10.

That would not affect you. When you upgraded the laptop from 7 Pro to 10 Pro back in July it got a digital license for 10 Pro, stored on the MS activation servers and linked to the hardware ID of the laptop. You could clean install W10 Pro without providing a key, or upgrade its W7 to W10, and it would activate from the existing digital license as soon as it could contact the activations servers.

The ending of the free W7/W8/W8.1 > W10 upgrade only affects those who have never upgraded before. Digital licenses obtained before MS ended the upgrade path are unaffected by this change, they remain valid and will activate any install of W10 (or W11, the digital license is valid for both).

In doing so he prevented me from responding to Emails, among other stuff.
Perhaps he was a Ransomware Novitiate and failed to give me any way to contact him!
