    New Drive, but no boot

So a friend of mine has a Lenovo X140e laptop and it came with an SSD of 128GB. He wanted a larger 512GB and bought one. Gave it to me and I cloned the drive using AOMEI. Everything went fine and completed, but when I installed the 512GB drive it will not boot. The Lenovo screen appears then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left cornet and that's all it does.

Reading around it seems like cloning going from small to large has issues that I am not familiar with. Can anyone here explain and help me to get this fixed?

    Some information.
    System is Windows 7
    8GB ram
Using another computer and slaving the drives in the partition is active.
They do not have a Windows 7 disk, but I do. Pro
Tried repairing the system using my Win7, but still no joy.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you

How did you clone did you copy disk to disk or copy partitions? If you copy partitions it often doesn't copy the boot sector. I would recline but use a different program to do it be sure to create and boot from the clone disk so nothing is locked by Windows

Thank you for the quick response samuria. Using the AOMEI program I only did the clone with nothing special. Looking at the options again there is an option:

    * Sector by sector clone
    * Align partition to optimize for SSD

The latter I get does not matter in this case. But not sure if the sector by sector is what I need. I'll try that one and see.

Which cloning program would one use to just clone the drive so that you just pop it in and it works?

    You will likely need to

    1. fix the drive letter
    then
    2. fix the bcd entry

You can use my noot media. Boot it up, and use nt6repair ( it is on the boot media desktop)

From the booted media select the drive letter of the non booting windows partition. Use the letter as seen from the booted media. Then click FIX.

    Next, use the autobootrepair feature

    New Drive, but no boot-nt6rep.jpg

You can use my boot media. Explorer, disk management, audio, net connection, Aomei Backupper and Aomei Part Assist also included.

Sometimes happens, no matter what cloning tool is used. Aomei is pretty good. It is the imaging program I recommend.

How did you actually do the cloning?. Please explain the procedure you used.

@SIW2 - Interesting program. I will need to look at

Ranger4 - Using AOMEI and used default settings. since there is not much to change.

@everyone - I was reading here in the same thread and found a post that said to just image the small drive, insert the new drive and re-image back.

Now this worked and the system booted up just fine. However, I now have a new problem which I will start another thread in the proper area. Thank you everyone for the help.

It would have been much quicker to just fix the letter and the bcd entry. A couple of clicks and it's done.

I can still do what you mentioned. I have the original small SSD and I could just do it again. I am curious though, here is the situation when the clone goes to the new drive

100MB partition > Windows 7 operating system partition (C: drive) > Lenovo recovery partition (D: drive) > extra space

So I would do what you mentioned, but how would one then get that extra space extended to the Windows operating partition? My understanding is that usually it has to be right after the operating system partition in order for Computer Management to "extend" it.

I'll try which ever, again, I can just go and do a clone again and then follow your instructions above, but got to get that extra space to extend the Windows 7 partition so that they can have a lot more room.

    Thank you

You would need to use a 3rd party partitioner, Aomei free (standard) version is good.

Likely to have to adjust bcd to access the lenovo recov partition after a move like that.
