Format Hard Drive

    @okwrangler2003: I suspect what is happening is that the system has not been set to boot from the installation media but from the hard drive. With a new hard drive this will of course fail. Booting from the install media should work, even if there was no hard drive. Of course the install could not proceed very far.

    I agree with LMiller7. I did try and point this out to you in my post below!

    I have anew hard drive installed.


    Pressing F11 or F12 does nothing.


    Let me explain what is happening:


    Press the "ON" button.
    Hit the [ESC] button repeatedly until the STARTUP MENU comes up.
    Press "F9 Boot Device Option"
    BOOT OPTION MENU page comes up.
    Chose Internal CD/DVD Rom Drive
    Hit ENTER
    "Windows is loading files" screen comes up and runs foe a while and then locks.


    My understanding is that the program wipes the hard drive and then when it tries to load the Windows 7 operating system, it can not because the hard drive has never been formatted

    [1] Is the new HDD recognised in the BIOS?
    [2] What program wipes the hard drive?
    [3] Is there a command prompt option available?
    [4] What disk are you booting from?

    Hi okwrangler2003,

    Have you got any other HDD's attached, if so detach them first?

    OK. Here you go!

    [01] Boot from the Win 7 installation DVD [it must be the installation DVD].
    [02] Goto the Repair option.
    [03] In the Repair Menu select command prompt [or press Alt-F10 I think].
    [04] In the command prompt you'll probably be at X:\sources.
    [05] Type Diskpart [if it doesn't recognize the command Diskpart, navigate to the system32 folder by typing cd X:\windows\system32 and press Enter.
    [06] Type Diskpart.
    [07] Type List Disk.
    [08] Type Select Disk # [where # is the Disk to Format].
    [09] Format the drive as NTFS by typing format fs=ntfs and pressing Enter.
    [10] When it has finished type Exit and press Enter.
    [11] Reboot the computer and install Win 7 [do as you did in your post #13].

    If any of the three disks you have are not an installation disk, then I will post the procedure to create one!

    I have the discs that are sold by Compaq. They don't have a repair option.

    The media you're booting from is bad.

    As I said, installation media formats the HDD. Id doesn't need to be formatted.

    You came for help but don't answer our questions.
    - Do you have a COA sticker?
    - Do you have any win installation disk?

    The repair option is in the installation DVD. You need to boot the installation DVD in order to get to the repair option!
