Help with bios req. No option to boot from disc to install OS.

Hello all,

I have a Hp ProBook 650 G1.

I'm attempting to reinstall Win7 OS. When I insert the disk and start laptop there is no option to press any key to boot from disk.

I previously altered the bios in the process to change the laptop from Win10 to Win7. I had to reset the bios password and change it to legacy mode..I cannot fully recall. I just need to know what bios setting to change to get the laptop to start from SP1(service pack 1) dvd.

The laptop worked fine for 3 weeks after installing win7 before it hung on start up at the HP logo and not progressing to actually fully start up. So a reinstall is required.

All input gratefully wanted.

Thanks, Jon

There isn't an automatic setting to select the optical drive after you have inserted a disk into the Optical Drive. Instead, you need configure the available options to tell the computer that this is what you want it to do.

So, you need to set the boot priority, in order for your computer to load the installation from disk. The Boot Priority determines the sequence the computer tries to find a suitable bootloader.

You can change the Boot Priority in two ways. Either i) enter the BIOS, and change Boot Priority from there. Or ii) use One-Time Boot Device selection, by pressing the F8 key repeatedly, on start-up.

Either way, if you set the Optical Drive as the First Boot device, then the computer is suitably configured to try to boot from the disk first.

You need to ensure secure boot isn't set in the BIOS and are you sure there are drivers for windows 7

Did the laptop came with win 7?
Did you try to launch Factory recover from BIOS? It will format your C: partition (ALL data will be erased) and load an image from the Recovery partition. It will end as the computer came from HP.

Thanks for all your input. I cant find how to change boot priority having googled it for my specific laptop...should I untick all devices apart from cd rom boot? and save changes?

There is also no F8 option when in list of function button options.

I also have googled how to ensure secure boot isn't set...it is also not clear how to do that.

The laptop came originally with Win8...then 10 now I am running (trying to) Win 7. I installed Win7 from original SP1 rom os disc..can I still factory reset from bios?

Apologies for being stumped...just need a bit of assistance. Thanks

I think you hit ESC or F2 to enter BIOS on a HP.
If it came with win 8 it can have secure boot set.
Try to repeatedly hit ESC when the computer starts. It will probably show a boot menu so you can choose the DVD to boot from or enter BIOS.

Thanks for that.
I am familiar with how to access the bios and how to select the cd drive. The issue is there is no 'Boot' top line menu heading.Should I enter f10 Bios set up? Another top line heading is 'Advanced' which has boot options, should I untick all items apart from cd rom boot?

What ramifications does Win8 have with a secure boot set? Do I need to alter the boot set...if so whicat do I alter?

Thanks,

Jon.

Secure Boot is a BIOS security feature available on Windows 8 and 10 machines, designed to protect the computer. As well as providing security, it unfortunately also prevents you from booting from USB/DVD media. The solution is to temporarily switch off Secure Boot. How to switch off Secure Boot depends on the BIOS menu layout. This tutorial explains how to disable secure boot, with examples from several BIOS menu layouts:
Enable or Disable Secure Boot on Windows 10 PC | Tutorials
Use the tutorial to establish whether secure boot is enabled on your computer, and then use it to disable this feature. Once you know Secure Boot is disabled, then go ahead and try to boot from your installation DVD. If you are still experiencing problems, then perhaps you could upload a picture of your computer's BIOS menu, and we will take a look.

Ok thank you for that. I will do what you have suggested. It has booted from the dvd rom 5 weeks ago...I am unsure why it is still not possible to do it again.

I will come back to you if I have a problem.

Thanks.
