Windows 7: Attempted repair install. Got stuck on the transfer files step: 72%.

I was able to get the updates to go through (after some hiccups) via the Simplex dingus, but Windows Update says that I have 14 important updates, and 9 optional updates. Some of those updates are no doubt telemetry-related (I ran a batch file that I often run called remove-windows-telemetry.bat, and I also re-set DisableOSUpgrade to "1" in the registry after I successfully completed the repair install), but some of them would probably be useful, I'd imagine.

But a question: do I have to reinstall any hotfixes that I have installed over the years, like I had to reinstall the updates?

Since I can't seem to open that file (I tried it in Notepad, it didn't work. I then tried it in Notepad++, and it said that the file was already in use [and not by Notepad, either], and it wouldn't even let me copy and paste it somewhere else) from within Windows 7, I'm going to try copying and pasting it from within TinyCore.

I will report back when I have done so.

ntuser.dat is a registry hive. It can be opened by a registry editor, not by notepad.
You can copy it from outside of windows, or by using something like regbak Acelogix Software - regbak free

I am responding to you from within TinyCore. I have successfully copied my Windows 7 user account's NTUSER.DAT, ntuser.dat.LOG1, ntuser.dat.LOG2, and ntuser.ini to a flash drive.

I will boot back into Windows 7 momentarily. What would you like me to do?

You could compare your ntuser hive with the deafult hive from the installation media and see if there is anything obvious in the differences. Possibly something in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ntuser\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

You can do hive comparisons with Registry Workshop | www.torchsoft.com
