Attempted repair install. Got stuck on the transfer files step: 72%.

I had to restore a full system image that I had made immediately before I initiated the repair install, because—although the repair install appeared to be going smoothly at first—once it got to the "Transferring files, settings, it managed to get most of the files transferred (according to the information given on the screen), but when it was pretty close to being done (based on the number of files that it says it went through, not based upon the percentage, which was 72%), it stalled on what appeared to be one file. Perhaps if it had gotten through that file, it would have stalled on another. I don't know.

I have need of easy access to my computer for academic usage, not just for casual use. So I would like if I would be able to successfully complete the repair install as soon as possible.

Now, this probably has nothing to do with it, but could the completely empty, unallocated 15 GB partition that seems to refuse to merge back with my main C-drive have something to do with this? It used to be part of a GNU/Linux dual boot that I got rid of ages ago. If not, forget that I mentioned that. I just want to get this repair install done.

And, before you ask, a full-wipe-and-reinstallation is not acceptable in my situation. So it is important that the focus be on successfully completing the repair install.

What software, DVD or USB boot, are you using to restore the full image made before the failed repair install? "...completely empty, unallocated 15 GB partition that seems to refuse to merge back with my main C-drive..." -- let's wait for others to weigh in, that might be a problem for repair install. To successfully merge that into c-partition, others will have to be told by you where it is -- in relation to the c-partition.

    Disk Management

Post a screenshot of the Disk Management => Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image.
Pay special attention to Step 5.

    I hope this helps!

To do a repair install you run setup.exe under Windows.

Post the Disk Management image so we can see what you have on your disk.

No, I made a full disk image with O&O DiskImage prior to attempting the repair install, so I was able to (after over an hour) restore my Windows 7 back to the way that it was prior to the attempt.

The ISO that I used for burning the drive (that I used to launch the repair install) that I used was an official Digital River one that Microsoft used to have up for download until a small number of years ago. It matched the version of Windows 7 that I use as well, so there is no problem there.

The software that I used to restore the full disk image was O&O DiskImage, a very good program. It put things right back to the way that they were.

(ignore the caption buttons. Their size is a major reason for the repair install in the first place. Don't bother trying to find other remedies for them. I went over that matter on another forum for a couple of months, and everyone basically agreed that a repair install was the only viable option, as everything else failed to fix the problem. So don't bother trying to fix that outside of the repair install.)

The only options that are selectable give when I right-click that empty partition are "New Simple Volume" "Properties" and "Help". Greyed out are "New Spanned Volume" and "New Striped Volume". I don't know what any of those mean, as I don't generally do a lot of work with partitions (to say the least).

I appreciate all of you taking the time to attempt to help me. Elsewhere, some have refused me help.

I did it again, directly from within Disk Management, but it looks exactly the same.

See the attached file, and then compare it to the above.
