Will a Win7 64 HD Home Work in Win 7 Pro Machine?
Hi
I had a Dell Studio 540 tower that started as a Vista os, over the years I updated it to Win 7 64 home. Few days ago the PC died, so I just found another Dell studio 540 same build. Would I be able just to drop in my hd from the old pc and have it work? Again old pc was running Win7 64 home and the new 540 is a original Win7 Pro, I bought it w/o a hd. Should it work? |

If the hardware is the same, it should boot up ok and without any major driver problems.
Because it is a different machine, it will need to be activated again. If you have a Pro license key on the new machine, you can type the word upgrade into start search box. Windows anytime upgrade will pop up. Put in the Pro key. It will run for a minute and tell you it has failed. Restart the machine and it will complete the upgrade to Pro. Then you need to enter the Pro key in the usual way to activate. If you don't have a Pro key, then you will need to call MS on the freefone number and tell them your old machine has failed. |

Yes the new PC does have the MS COA WIN7 Pro sticker, also the seller did include the original Dell re installation disc and driver disc.
So worse case I would have to reload the OS (which Im trying to avoid) BTW when I do the update to Pro will it be a pro version or the home one? Make no difference to me as its a backup pc that is just used for email and browsing Thanks!!! If the hardware is the same, it should boot up ok and without any major driver problems.
