I'd say that's probably your best bet then mate, but as gregrocker says, it can (& will) be done (eventually!).

Strange, re-reading this Technet thread on the "Preparing your Desktop" stall, it says it is because of a change in drive letter. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...b-a0bffd0388c3

Well, we've moved drives of all letters over to first partition and recovered MBR with startup repair and never faced this.

It has got to be pre-existing problems with your OS, as you complained previously.

Maybe saving this one isn't worth it. Will you lose anything valuable?

You will gain a much better install, no doubt.

And your data partition is seperate from the partition you are trying to install on, correct?

    And you backed it up?

Data is still there and will be there when you start up.

But I always recommend backing up, just so they don't rip a badge off my shoulder:

Based on what you have written to now, I suggest:

Back up your files. If you can't stand to lose your Win7 partition, use Backup Center to store an image of it which can be used to reimage HD in 15 minutes. Move/Copy operations can fail.

Not really. Don't have a externall HDD big enough for it.

Well it's too late now anyway to back up.

Format install from boot will be much cleaner and quicker way to get you up and running, and solve your previous problems.

Are you feeling good about doing it?

If so, then boot from installer.

Choose Custom, format the first partition (ONLY) and install there.
