I can't see a benefit in doing that!

If you do want to do that, it is the same as performing a Repair Install in effect, which is probably a better choice because you will end up with a nice new clean fresh install of the OS without losing your data or programs. You will however, still need to update the OS after that using either WU, SIMPLIX or DISM++ to install the updates?

This might help you decide . . .

Repair Install - Overview

A Repair Install is actually called an In-Place-Upgrade [replaces the corrupted OS with a new fresh copy] and is performed from within Windows itself. You will either need a Win 7 installation DVD or an ISO file [extract the files with something like 7-zip]. ALL your User Accounts, Folders, Files, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Data Files, Icons, and any installed programs are left intact. It does however, remove your activation key [Product Key, so make sure that you have it handy], and DELETES ALL the WU's [Window updates] installed. During the Repair Install process it automatically creates a FULL backup copy [Windows.old] of the OS. To get the OS up to date [Windows Updates], you can either use DISM++ or SIMPLIX.

NOTE: To retrieve your Product Key, you can either use Belarc Advisor or Magic Jelly Bean. If you use Magic Jelly Bean, it is the CD Key that you want, NOT the Product ID.

To perform the Repair Install, you just need to double-click the setup.exe file and follow the prompts. When you get to the installation screen, select In-Place-Upgrade.

IMPORTANT: You CANNOT do a repair install at boot, in Safe Mode, using a system repair disk, or using an integrated Windows update disk. Basically, this process can ONLY be performed from within the LIVE OS.

I hope this helps!

Ok...Im going to admit defeat. Thanks Paul for your input...I know you wanted to believe!!! ..but Win10 it has to be.

Im going to ten forum to look at how to upgrade to 10 for free...via the media creation tool. It says I can do it if I have a legally activated Win7 OS.. I bought a HP Service Pack 1 cd and installed from it..is that a 'legally activated' Win7 OS? nIf so I can go through with the install through microsoft?

Alternatively I have a Hd that came with this laptop that has Win10...When I put the original hd back in..it doesnt read the hd...as I altered the bios.

What do I need to alter in the bios for it to run the Win10 (original hd)...if I cant download a free copy of Win10 through the MCT and Microsoft website?

Thanks,

Jon.
