Did you run the Win7 Upgrade Advisor on your old OS?

Are you OC'ing? If so, set all BIOS to default.

That Dell 1300 might also need a BIOS update to A10, check current version in BIOS.

Try booting from the Win7 Installer to do a Custom install with formatting. This error is common when trying install from the prior OS.

If not, can also mean failing HD, so download diagnostics from drive maker to scan/repair.

Ok then I don't think you are overclocking, more a gamer thing.

If you look at the Support downloads page here it has a BIOS update for that older Dell model. It should tell you the BIOS version on the first bootup screen, or run an audit of your BIOS/hard/software using Attachment 40206.

If you do not get a prompt to "press any key to boot from DVD/CD" when you restart with DVD in drive, then look for the F-key to enter BIOS given on first screen, tap it repeatedly, then set DVD drive to boot first in Boot tab of BIOS. You can also look for your BIOS version then.

Ok then you need to boot your DVD to do a Custom install so you can use Advanced Drive tools to Format.

Xp uses a slightly different partition table and needs fresh Win7 formatting.

You cannot perform any installs on a battery.

Plug laptop in and try booting from DVD.
