Windows 7: windows 7 upgrade from XP error code 0x0000007B

28 Nov 2009   #11

Most likely the hard drive controller conflicting from XP (format the drive) or needs correct one added into the installer.

Could also be BIOS settings.

Here is the troubleshooting guide for that error:

STOP 0x0000007B - STOP 0x7B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE - Fix STOP Error 0x0000007B

Windows 7 Pro & Vista Home Premium

If you are on Windows XP and planning to UPGRADE...

YOU MUST DO A CLEAN INSTALL. There is no upgrade path. There are user migration tools you can use, but you will need to backup your files and do a clean install.

I have seen several threads about this and just want to clarify. The upgrade from Windows Vista is a valid upgrade path, but Windows XP to Windows 7 is not

You can still use the Upgrade disk, you just can't do an in-place Upgrade from XP.

It wouldnt' let him choose Upgrade anyway if he is running it from XP, only Custom.

The solution is to boot and get the needed drivers into the installer, or get the BIOS settings right.

But first of all you need to know you have the latest BIOS version. Look at your System Information, or use Belarc Advisor to see what version you have and check it against latest version on Support Downloads page for your model.

To me, it doesn't matter what operating system you going to,. I always perform a "clean" install.

Some times I use GParted to get the Windows install partition yo around 60 GB,.
You can't shrink it that much in Windows.
