All the links and forum posts I have found for this are outdated.
I have an old laptop that I want to install Windows 7 on. However, where can I get some media to install it with? Preferably as a bootable USB drive, but I guess I'll take what I can get.
I went to microsoft's site but the link to download a tool to make an install drive just sends me to a page reminding me that windows 7 is no longer supported.
To make a Win 7 USB boot able drive:
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
diskpart
list disk (it will list all drives. Identify the USB drive number)
select disk n (replace n by the USB drive number obtained with list disk)
clean
convert mbr
create part primary
select part 1
format fs=fat32 quick
assign
active
exit (to exit diskpart)
Use 7Zip or Winzip or Winrar to extract all files and folders from the Win 7 zip file to the USB drive.
Windows can be installed in two ways: Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you must boot the installation drive as Legacy
To install as UEFI-GPT you must boot the installation drive as UEFI.
If you have a UEFI BIOS, you should install as UEFI-GPT
Detach any other drives (SATA or Power cable) from the MB.
During POST, press F12(?) to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name). Select USB UEFI (Name).
Go to install and delete ALL partitions on the main drive till you have one and only one unallocated space and then proceed.

For the updates, use Single file with all updates - Simplix
First get the installation iso file.
Search for this:
en_windows_7_professional_n_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677207.iso
or this if you want 32 bit:
en_windows_7_professional_with_sp1_x86_dvd_u_677056.iso
then create a bootable usb with the contents of the iso file on it.
One simple way is to use usb7ice to do the jobUsb7ice.zip
