Might this work on an HP Elite 8300 CMT?
I'd like to try it however, essentially, I am a novice and unsure if it has the potential of working.
If you feel it could, I'd give it a try.

It can be done on hp 8300, but is more complicated than the dells.

For your hp 8300 I suggest you get a sata ssd as your os disk and use mechanical disk just for extra storage.
Sata ssd is a massive improvement on mechnical hard disk and they slot straight in with no messing around.
crucial mx500 are good quality and value, 500gb is plenty for an os disk. Probably around $45 in the US and well worth it.

Surprisingly, the samsung 870 EVO 500gb is the same price, and allegedly performs a bit better in tests than the crucial mx500. It is usually more expensive

Thank you for your quick and thorough response.
I will take your advice and get a sata ssd as my os disk and use the existing mechanical disk just for extra storage.

use a sata 3 port for the ssd. the blue ones If I recall correctly on those machines. You should notice quite a difference with the sata ssd.

I'm lucky enough to discover that the latest 2.78 BIOS update actually allows PCIe to be detected and usable via the SATA NVMe portion (M or M+B key).

my HP 800 G1 TWR is much better model to do this. it's easy to mod.
Add NVMe Boot Support to a HP EliteDesk 800 G1. Just a moment...
I am going to mod HP 8300 TWR too. (my order of NVMe adapter is shipping).
When mod out of all HP models, I am going to try MSI A68HM. It's taking method of NVMe-boot vs. Clover-EFI bootloader. frankly, it looks NOT much improvement. maybe its boot select takes time (in seconds). and it requests USB drive on USB port to work. I don't like the idea.

I am learning Linux meanwhile waiting for hardware delivery.
HP 8300 mod, latest method is to use Flashrom, a linux based tool, rather than previous SOIC 16 programmer.
Procedure: probe the chipname. next read out BIOS image. modify it, then re-write it back into the chip. the last step is a little risky.
I did drill several times (skipping last step) on various PCs. IMO, if it works, then this method is to work on any motherboard. given motherboard BIOS write-protection can be disabled and the BIOS chip is supported in Flashrom lib. Otherwise, still requests a SOIC 16 programmer.

It is a bit complicated for many people. Fortunately for many consumer motherboards modded bios are being shared but the proprietary oem machines you have to do youself.
