it seems like the only two versions of windows 7 home is basic and premium, is that right?
The 4 primary versions of Windows 7 SP1 are:
    Home Basic
    Home Premium
    Professional
    Ultimate

Can I ask is there a reason you're wanting to install Win7 vs Win10? You can install Win10 and it will work fine without a license key unlike Win7.

He still has not provided a description of his computer (other than sayin it is a desktop), so we do not even know yet if it will install Windows 7 SP1 and provide drivers for all of its primary devices.

it seems like the basic version only supports 8gb of ram.
I probably need at least 16gb, so im going to go with premium instead.

Even though you got it sorted out there really was no real choice but to select Home Premium. Microsoft needed to create a lower cost point between Starter and Home Premium. The result was Home Basic which was sold only in emerging markets.
