If you have a name brand computer then list the model number and serial number. If you have a custom build then list the specs. For example, CPU, RAM, motherboard, GPU, etc.

If you look hard enough you might be able to find out why the upgrade failed but that is really not important. It might be a lot of things including an incompatibility that can't be resolved. It is best to move on trying something else as indicated below.

If the computer originally came with Windows 7 then you should be able to upgrade to Windows 8 or 10. If the computer is older and came with Windows XP or Vista then an upgrade to Windows 8 might not be possible.

Sometimes an upgrade runs into problems and reverts back the previous version. One thing to try is do a clean install in your case Windows 8. Your chances of success are better that way. Still no guarantee. If you succeed then it is suggested you take the next step and do the free upgrade to Windows 8.1.

In any case make sure you have a current backup of your computer in case you have to restore back to Windows 7.

It's an HP 8300 8300 CMT with 16 GB of Ram and 8 TB of Disk.
    Nothing exceptional!
I cloned my W7P and have booted from the Clone.
I have been attempting the Upgrade on the Clone using a purchased MS 8.0 Disk.
I run the Upgrade, register the Software with Microsoft, once Online and once via telephone and the registration works.
When I try the download of Updates from the Microsoft Update Site, it lists the Downloads required and optional.
I check them all and start the process which runs for hours.
Once downloaded, they begin to be applied.
Once ALL of them are applied, then the STUPID message appears that something is wrong, and it begins the process of Reverting.
All in all, each iteration is about seven hours long.
No clue, no potential source of the problem, just a traditional Microsoft adios!

Can you direct me to the FREE Windows 8.1 Upgrade based upon my Systems credentials?

Since you have a clone of your Windows 7 disk then you should forget about updating and just do a clean install of Windows 8. I know you will have to reinstall other software but that is the best way to go.

Once you do the clean install of Windows 8 you can check the Device Manager to identify any devices that are not working correctly. You might find drivers at HP for your computer. You can also run Windows Update to complete necessary updates to Windows. Once that is done you can do the free upgrade to Windows 8.1. You can get the free upgrade from Microsoft. Better hurry because that offer will probably go away on January 10, 2023 when Microsoft officially ends all support for Windows 8.1.

The following website will show you how to download the official ISO file to do the upgrade Windows 8 to 8.1. For example the 64-bit download is: Win8.1_English_x64.iso (4.02 GB (4,320,526,336 bytes)).

Upgraded to 8.1 as suggested using the cloned W7P disk - EXCELLENT!

In three hours vs about 14 wasted hours, I was using W8.1 on the cloned version W7P.

Thank you for your advice Mister Ed.
