Need Win7 Repair/Recovery Flash Drive - Lost Dual Boot w/Upgrade

I performed an automatic upgrade to my dual-boot Win7/Ubuntu 3 weeks ago and have been unable to boot Windows. At a minimum I need to recover dual boot or Windows in order to improve my situation. I am working with an older ThinkPad X201 with Legacy BIOS (v 1.37). GRUB was upgraded as part of the diagnosis effort but it did not result in the display of the menu for me to choose the OS I wanted to load. With this is mind I am in a position where I need to question the integrity of the MBR, GRUB, and the Windows boot loader. For these reasons I have been advised to prepare a Win7 repair flash drive. I have the OS CD so I can accomplish but may need instruction.

Please let me know what additional information you might need to help me restore dual boot capability.

I upgraded Ubuntu from 22.04 LTS to 24.04 LTS. Now the machine bypasses GRUB and will only boot Ubuntu. I prepared the Windows 7 rescue CD and attempted to use it twice with an external CD and BIOS priority for this drive but it failed each time and reported that the CD was a non-system disk. The rescue disk was prepared with a second Win7 laptop that is also 64-bit.

I ran a similar utility in Ubuntu and the forum experts are not comfortable with the information it provided so we're still searching for more information to understand the situation.

You could try either Macrium Rescue CD or Rescatux. I would go with Rescatux, since it can repair both Windows and Linux. It lets you select the Windows installation and repair the boot manager.

Are you sure the upgrade did not override the Windows installation? If so, not much you can do but reinstall.

The latest Rescatux is too big to fit on a CD, you need a thumb drive. The older one, which is just as good, will fit on a CD.
