If you want to install Windows7 , there is another (more safe) way for you

    1. Boot from Windows 7 DVD
    2. During Installation, select your Windows XP partition , delete it and choose the empty partition to be your installation target. Don't do anything to Vista's partition.
    3. Install windows 7 normally.

That's it. Windows 7 will take care of the boot entries and will give you both Vista and Windows 7 to boot from.

Note: Later on, when you enter Windows 7, you will see your Vista partition missing. Don't get scared. It's not missing, its just hidden. When you fiinish the steps above, come back here and I'll give you a small guide to unhide it. In any case, you will be able to boot to both Vista and Windows 7.

    Cheers
Yes this is the proper way surely? Well its how i have always done it. I don't understand the theory behind just deleting the files etc??

    2. Normally, after Windows 7 installation, only BCD will be your boot manager because Windows 7 will install its own new BCD, which will automatically include your Vista options as well, it finds it by itself.
Yes so what should I do - delete Acronis and leave my existing version of BCD alone, which will be updated presumably by Windows 7 ?

Just want to make sure having either, both or none of these apps is the preferred way forward

    Cheers again

    Hi rozel,

I suggest deleting Acronis and letting Win 7 boot management do the job.

    Hope it helps

    Hello cbkitt,

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

Only thing is that doing that may kill your boot files.

You should be able to use the Seven install disk to fix the MBR, but I have never tried it so can make no guarantees.

    Hi cbkitt,

You would need to go through the steps needed to make E ( I assume HD1 ) the boot hd.

Then clone it to what is now C (HD 0).

This means copying the bootfiles from C to E and installing a NT6 compatble mbr on it , before cloning.

You would need to use the command line, if you are comfortable with that.
