    mouse keyboard freeze during installation

    Hi,
I have a dell vostro 420, and I want to install windows 7 32bit home edition.
I was running xp fine untill a while ago. I was having hard drive problems.
I ended up getting a replacement hard drive, which is now in my PC.
I tried to do a clean install of 7, but the mouse and keyboard froze during install.
I'm able to install xp, which works fine, but would rather be running windows 7!
    how can I fix this!?

I did manage to get it up and running eventually on the old hard drive-after turning off and on many many times during install due to mouse/keyboard freezes! and general 'hanging' at points during install
windows 7 then locked up my mouse keyboard after a few seconds or minutes (or froze?)
windows 7 safe mode worked fine.

    please help!

Hi Doc, welcome to the forums
for some reason Dell doens't want to give me the specs for your computer. do you have a Video card? Are you using a DVI connection or D-Sub (VGA) for your monitor? D-Sub is preferred and might solve your problem
    Let me know

I was running xp ok, not sure if it was 32 bit or not. I also have an install cd for Vista business 32bit sp1, I tried to install that yesterday, but got the same error-frozen keyboard /mouse. I then took outt he usb keyboard mouse and put in a ps2 mouse & keyboard. Instead of freezes, I got bsod's.

Ive been using DVI, I will try using VGA when I next give it a go.
    Thanks guys!

Doc, try with VGA and let us know. Stick to the PS2 mouse and keyboard, they should be better than USB for installation

Ok, im tried with the VGA.
First off I plugged it into the vga connection at the back of the computer, turned the pc on and got this:
    ''
    unsupported video configuration detected
    action is required
this computer has an add-in graphics card, but the monitor is plugged into the intregrated video connector.
to attach the monitor cable to the add-in graphics card:
    1.shut down the computer.
2.plug the cable into the add-in graphics card connector.
    3.turn on the computer
    f1 continue, f2 setup utility
    ''

So then I turned it off, plugged in the vga end to a vga > dmi attachment thing, and put it in the dmi slot.
Turned it back on, didnt get that screen (above) and booted from cd. It hung on 'windows is starting.' turned off and on again.
got to screen where it says, select language / keyboard layout, then got a bsod.(didnt write its error code down)

I then put the vga cable back in the vga slot (without that dmi/converter attachment) and turned on
(from now on whenever I start up /auto reboot, I get that screen that was mentioned earlier and press f1 to skip)

I then booted from the cd, and thing were running smoothly. I thought that my problem was over!
Then, as soon as I typed in the product key, the screen freezes with a several vertical bars, with many horizontal bars within the vertical ones.

Doc, you need to remove your graphics card and then use the VGA connection. Apparenlty you were trying to connect to your ionboard video adapter while the GEForce 9800GT was still in.

I removed the graphics card and connected using the VGA.
It was going fine untill it froze (with a several vertical bars, with many horizontal bars within the vertical ones) again.
This time at the Completing Installation stage.

Doc, If I am reading your post correctly. you have two sticks of ram installed. Try removing one of them then install. If 7 installs then you can add it back in. Good luck to you with this problem, and welcome to SF

If that doesn't work I suggest testing your memory with Memtest86.
you should do several passes, preferably overnight. Ideally one stick at a time.
