Windows 7 Nightmare

I am currently working on an MSI DKA790GX Platinum computer and it has been horrible. The person came to me saying when they tried to install Win7 over Vista they could no longer see their hard drives. I go to the BIOS and ensure AHCI is enabled, it is but the hard drives are not recognized in the BIOS. I switch it to IDE and the Hard Drives come up. So I boot to the Win7 install disk, thinking it will be a breeze. It takes FOREVER for the installer to come up, and as soon as it does i get the error, "A required CD/DVD drive device is missing. If you have a floppy disk, CD, DVD l or USB flash drive, please insert it now."

I know Win7 installer doesn't like IDE but the HDD aren't recognized to install to if it isn't in IDE emulation. I am in desperate need of help.

Try switching to AHCI. I know the BIOS doesn't look like it recognizes them, but you might be surprised.

Cut it down to bare min. Mobo, CPU, one ram stick (if there is two), DVD drive, and one hard drive, keyboard, mouse, and Video, no other cards. Reset the BIOS back to default settings and boot of DVD to install and see how that goes. Also you might want to look at MSI website for a BIOS update.

I have checked the BIOS and I am up to date, the computer is bare bones, and I have cleared the CMOS several times.

When I change it to AHCI and hit the boot option keys, the SATA HDD and Optical drive come up

1st: Floppy Drive
IDE: ATAPI DVD A DH16A3L
IDE: WDC WD6400AAKS-65A7B0

When I select the DVD drive I receive CDBOOT: Couldn't find BOOTMGR.
When I select the HDD I receive "A disk read error has occured"

If you have a 4 gig flash drive try loading windows threw there. I believe Brinks created a very nice walk threw to get a bootable Flash drive with windows 7 install on it.

Don't set AHCI. You will be much better off. AHCI causes problems for users under Win 7. The installation usb key is a perfect suggestion and way to go.

burning CD/DVD is a nightmare in windows 7 pro
I spent the last 4 hours trying to burn files to a DVD in Windows 7 Pro. Finally I had to resort to InfroRecorder to do the job. This is ridiculous. Nothing needs to be that difficult.
